Wheels and Hubs

I've been daydreaming about a small trailer to pull behind the Jeep for a long time now. It will need to be able to take trail abuse, but still be good for everyday hauling too. I think it's finally time to put my ideas into some sort of a plan, so I have a couple of issues.

  • Does anyone know the floor dimensions of the Military 1/4 ton trailers?
  • I have stock alminum wheels on my 2000, and a matching spare. Logically I want to use the same on the trailer, but the factory wheels don't have a hole in the center for a trailer style wheel hub. Besides using a rear axle from a donor XJ (which I won't do) or having holes cut in all seven wheels (which seems kinda stupid) what options are there?
  • Can I use a front unit bearing with a dummy shaft in it? Are there any 2wd unit bearings that would work?
  • I'm going to have a cover for it, I'm thinking military style canvas and I'll be using it for everything from firewood to camping supplies.
  • Tailgate or no tailgate?
  • I'm thinking of an independant suspension, perhaps rubber torsion springs, or maybe even fab up something cool with air bags so I can adjust the spring rate to the load.
I can't wait to get started, just need to get the heat put in the polebarn!
