Wheeling this Saturday 11-8-08

So I was planning on attending “The November to Remember III” until I looked at the posts on colorado4x4 and saw the vehicle count is between 50 and 60 rigs. That is far too many rigs. My luck, I’d be at the back of the pack and end up getting home at 3am. So instead I was thinking about hitting something around Denver. I was thinking about Middle St Vrain, Coney Flats or CORE. It’s going to be 60 degrees out at CORE, but they charge you $20.00 bucks and they don’t have trails, more like big rock piles and steep rocky hills.

Middle St. Vrain, Coney Flats is up near Nederland and is supposed to be 47 degrees.

It is my Boys 1st year birthday, the wifey has friends coming over for a party. (although I think My boy would rather go four wheeling :shocked


My neighbor across the street with a YJ has been wanting to do MSV/Coney again before it really snows and wanted to run this couple weekends ago, but it never happened.

I will talk to him tonight and let you know, we are in Broomfield so not so far away.

The only reason I picked Saturday was the weather is going to be a bit nicer. There is a front moving in and will hit sometime on Sunday. But if we get up there early enough, should be done before it moves in. I'd like to run it MSV to Coney flats, so that the rock hill is uphill, a bit more challenging.

Yes, Camp Dick entrance, last time I was up there really dry and the lake was low, that was July '08 with Hypoid

Well it does look like I am unable to attend, mentioned to the wife and I got the evilest look you can imagine :hang:


I went to talk to my neighbor across the street and found out he is out of town until Friday, and his wife does not think he would want to hit the hills Saturday. Although that is the wife speaking for him, he might have a different opinion when he gets back.

Depends? Go put on some rocker guards, you might be able to. Hypoid took the mommy mobile, "3 budget boost and 31's, with sway bar discos.............

There is only a couple spots that you have to be careful where to place your tires to avoid rocks sticking out grabbing at your rockers. I have seen stock Toy p/u & 4runners on it?

Skully forgot to mention the loose nut behind the wheel.

I would not take a stocker on this trail. If you already had some wheel time with it and don't care about body damage, OK. This is not a good place to discover you should have lubed and inspected the underside.

One of the Ford guys was looking to do an easy trail Sunday. He has a newb to initiate, wants to keep it fun.

I'd like to still run this on Saturday, looks like Sunday is going to be crappy. I don't want to wheel alone, so NTR III was the alternative if nobody wanted to run MSV/Coney. Lyons works for me, what time are you thinking. I will be trailering my junk, so would like to leave the trailer at the exit of coney and drive my heep down to the enterence of MSV.

How does 9:00 am in Lyons sound? By then the sun will start to warm things up.

Let's meet at the U-Pump-It Station before town on the north side of Ute Hwy (36 & 66),
1/3 mi. past (west of) the Diamond Shamrock Station. They have more room for parking
and you won't have to cross traffic to get in and out of the gas station. :lecture:

Up the road there is a country market where you turn left onto Hwy 7 but they're a little
expensive and have a limited lineup so pack your picnic lunch at home. :chef:

When was the last time you ran these trails? I haven't been up there in 7 years. I'm wondering where the best place to leave my trailer and truck, if I remember correctly, Pleasant Valley is fairly small. I may just leave it up in Lyons and drive down from there. I guess the other place to leave it would be in that parking lot by the MSV trail head.

XCASTLEXJ could probably make it through MSV. Jump in one of our rigs and hit coney flats. If I leave my trailer at the trail head, I'd probably run the trail backward, take him back down to his rig.

Like I said I was up there in July, not much has changed, I didn't feel the big up hill was very difficult, the loop has lots to offer though. It was really dry and the big water crossing was low compared to a year early at the same time. You guys have fun! :wave1:

Well, Curiosity had me so I drove up to Peaceful Valley this afternoon to check things out.

At the Peaceful Valley/Camp Dick turn off (milepost 50 on Hwy 72)snow was blowing with crusted snow on the ground.
A rock bordered roadside parking area is available 1/2 mi. north on Hwy 72 for your tow rig and trailer.

Did you want to make it a full day of wheeling?
My suggestion would be to first wheel Left Hand Canyon at 9am(still has a couple of challenging trails) then move up to the Middle Saint Vrain - Coney Creek about noontime. The higher elevation can be pretty crisp in the mornings.

I was prepping the heep today, took it out for a test drive and came across a fairly major problem with the tranny. It's making some bad noises and is slipping, fluid level looks good. Sorry about that, I thought it was good to go, but I don't think it will make it through the trail.

I may just have to wheel the Dodge, it's been a few years since I wheeled it, but it should do OK. It's up on 38's and has a detroit locker in the rear. If I remember correctly, both MSV and coney are fairly wide trails.

If there is snow by Peaceful Valley, I wounder what the trail looks like.

Which trails are you thinking about up at LHC?
