Are there any REALLY good place to wheel in Maine? Something that could accomadate stockers and modified XJ'S?

TOZOVR (RJ) knows a few places up there... but he doesnt come around much now that he sold the XJ... i can think of probably 5 members/users in that area .. im sure they will pop up soon...

There must be, because there's a Jeep Jamboree held there every year. TOZOVR and friends took us on some trails out a bit beyond Ellsworth last autumn, and I'm hoping we can sneak in a repeat performance before his father sells the campground.

If anyone has any info about the trails around Bethel, where the Jambos are run, let us know so we can think about an event there. Don't post trail info on the open forums, though -- contact me or one of the chapter officers by PM or e-mail

We'll be doing more runs in the Mohawk Trail region of northwestern Massachusetts this year, too. Depending on where you are in Maine, it may not be any farther from you than Paragon is from me.

Yes there are good places to wheel in Maine, I have been to 2 so far. One more challenging than the other, but both were good and both times I was with TOZOVR, but because I am not from there and we took a rather complicated route, I can't tell ya how to get to them. So, I guess I am really not much of a help, But I would check back here often because TOZOVR is pretty good at posting wheeling events on here.

A couple of friends and I went wheeling there around Bethel last fall with a group called te Maine Jeepers (or something like that).. they know the trails through an association with the logers or the forest service.... a pretty sweet deal for a bunch of Flatfenders.

Hey crew!

Eagle, while AV4x4 has been sold (To a fellow NAXJA member might I add...) and I don't have the XJ, my parents are not selling the CG this year!!

Let's do it again!!!!!!

The FJ is getting the 33's and small lift (yeah, it only takes 1.5" of lift to run 33x10.5's LOL!!) and we should be ready to ROCK come spring!!!

I head to Paragon to shoot pics for a crew next week for 4 days and will be back the 5'th....please hit me at rj@bwoverland for any questions.....for any XJ gear, drop Chris (C-MuRdaA) a line at [email protected]

Talk to you all soon!!

if you look at a map of maine you will see that half the state is logging roads north of bangor tons of wheeling

What's the deal on those logging roads? I have both the Gazeteer and DeLorme's New England CD and I can see tons of possibilities. Do you have to get special permissions for certain areas or what? :dunno: Would love to get up there for a week with a canoe, tent and fishing gear but don't want to go where we're not supposed to. Thanks for any info you've got!

Marshall, there is lots that is open and lots that is gated...I'm working with some landowners right now and hoping to get a 4 day trip mapped out soon.

RJ

PS....I just bought a hardtop Zook to make Big.

Keep me in mind RJ! I know Eagle wants to go too, though when Mama gets up here we have a hard time dragging him away. :loveu: I can't wait to see you three in the little Zook, that will be just tooo funny!

The official Maine state road map shows some of the timber roads in the northern part of the state as having gates, but I've always read the map as indicating that those are toll stations. Are they tolls, or just roadblocks? If those are tolls, are there other gates that aren't shown on the map?

What's the wheeling and camping like up toward the headwaters of the Allagash Wilderness Waterway? (Or any other parts of the Allagash that are closer to civilization.)

4DAYs of wheeling in Maine!!! Now you are talking, that is up my way, and I like Maine. So now all those B2B Rover snobs can have their multiday wheeling events, which will suck in comparison to an RJ event, even if it is headed by an FJ ( Fake Jeep) To all you Noobs : ) . J/K I think they are cool and I have often found my self drooling over other vehicles, mostly Unimogs tho Just dont forget about us XJ guys, Bass Harbor was cool, but a 4 day excusioun would be even cooler

The alagash is completely gated off now with barriers....even if you can get past one set you''ll find another soon....the Golden rd is a toll rd but where you see "gates" now are actually blockades (Jumbo jersey barriers).

C'mon Moto...surely you can see the draw of 30 spline axles, 8.75" ring gear, 1.3" axle thickness, no driveline vibes....Good stuff ;)

Here it is before the 33's!

We're headed to Paragon this weekend!!!!! Whooooo

Eagle I'm working now to getting the Rt set with some folks who went up last spring.

Will the trip be open to stock XJ's? I MIGHT be able to put a BB on...
When do you expect the trip to be?
Is it open to forum users? (I'm not a "member", yet)

Usually RJ drags everyone and everything along for the ride. :laugh2:

Hey RJ, that thing looks funny. . . It's to short for you, it's the wrong color and I'll bet it doesn't have Duncan's custom upholstery job on the back seat!

Looks short but is just as tall at the roof as the XJ was at 6" of lift LOL...and has 31x10.5's now....will be on 33x10.5's with a whopper of a lift...1.5" LOL....a whole new world!!

Woody, Griz is right! the more the merrier IMHO. Should actually be mostly fireroads and little offshoots depending on time. Pack your flyrod ;)

Where and when do you plan on doing this? If it's not for a while, I should be able to modify most of my XJ...(I don't even have front tow hooks) :(
Since I live in Maine, it would probably be just a day trip for my brothers and me....

If this isn't a chapter event but just a ride organized by RJ, he's free to let anyone and everyone attend. If it's declared a chapter event, then each member who attends can invite one non-member vehicle to attend as their guest. If it's a chapter event, NAXJA safety rules will have to apply. Even if it isn't a chapter event, the equipment NAXJA requires is pretty minimal and nobody should venture off-road without at least this basic stuff:

NAXJA Safety Rules said:
All vehicles must have the following equipment to attend the off road portion NAXJA sponsored Events

* Legally required automobile insurance and registration;
* Fully-charged fire extinguisher;
* First Aid Kit;
* Tow Strap (no metal hooks allowed), Tow Chain, or Winch;
* Safety belts;
* Full-size spare tire, jack, and lug wrench;
* Hooks both front and rear (or suitable attaching point)
* CB (HIGHLY recommended, but not mandatory)

A Class III receiver hitch on either end is acceptable instead of tow hook(s) on that end. Tow hooks must be properly attached, and that means NO WELDING of tow hooks. Securely attached D-rings are also acceptable in place of hooks.

For national events a CB is optional but "recommended." I'm still of the opinion a working CB should be mandatory for chapter events. It's not only foolish, it's also inconsiderate to join a group on a trail ride when you have no way of communicating with the other vehicles (other than semaphor).

There is plenty of "open" wheeling avavilable up here! Hey 88 where are you? There are some really nice areas that you could do some tenting / wheeling. In and around the Rangely area there are ALOT of old logging roads for acess. I am out of Windham , shoot me a line I can usually get you in touch with someone who is wheeling on any given weekend , or atleast point you in th eright direction. I have a camp in Sweden (near Frueburg) even there are some really nice "low inpact" trails . Heck I could prolly be persuaded with say..........................BEER , to let ya tent in the yard at camp.
