Im stuck in this dilemna. Im leaving for WPI this August and i cant bring my Jeep my first year. Now, as with many of you as well, ive grown to love my jeep. Its going to be hard leaving it for 8 months only gettin to drive it a few times in between semesters. But come May, i get to make a decision. Ill be allowed to bring a vehicle sophomore year and i want to bring my jeep but gas prices are going through the roof. At the same time, i have the choice of either offroading route (lifting it 3" with 31's, regearing to 4.56's, and locking both front and rear ~ $2000-2500) or the (i.m.o.) the "fun" route of building a stroker/supercharger/turbo, etc. An engine rebuild would be fun turning it into a 4.6 or even 4.7 looking for 300hp. That route would probably be in the same ball park as lifting it. However, with the gas prices and 100 miles round trip possibly every weekend, a smaller car may be worth it....Now i dont exactly want to do that but with the money situation as well as the jeep needing repairs every day would make it harder to decide. The final option, and what seems to be looking best, is to keep it in best running order, save the money for more tools, books, and possibly the lift and engine work later in life. Basically want im asking for is your opinion as far as what i should do.

I do damn near 100 miles a day in my XJ at least. If the gas issue is killing you you have to change it, after all, it's only your choice.
Well it was under my dad's name 40k miles ago and he still loves it, so i was thinking of keeping it in the family no matter what. And in that case, i could buy something smaller with the money he would give me $4k or so, and still drive the jeep when it snows or when i want to have fun. But idk, i figure maybe i should keep and see what i can do after the first year. Any other ideas would help.PhunkXJ said:

Well you mention doing 2000 - 2500 worth of work to it, does that mean this money exists?
If I were you I'd store the Jeep at mom and dads (if possible) and take that money and buy a daily driver for the school years. When you're out of school (and even some in the summers between years) you can work on the Jeep and get it up to what you want.

Thats the other thing, the money "kinda" exists but at the same time i think i should be spending it on college instead of racking up those loans. I would be able to drive it 4 months a year, mainly in the summer. I guess ill make a better decision once i get past my first year of college, who knows, that stroker money may turn into party money. party1:

No, im by westover ARB (near springfield) and worcester is in central mass. Its an hour drive over there and when you are there, they have no place to park even for faculty. The city of Worcester is crammed with residents parking not to mention other students. Whats even worse is when the snow bans and all that happen and i heard its a real pain. I really wish i could do it but ill guess ill give it a year, who knows i might take it up 4th term and see if anyone catches on.creeperjeep said:

If I was in your situation I would pay down the college loans as much as I could with whatever excess cash I had, so when I was done with school I wouldn't have student loans hanging over me until I'm 35 years old like most of my friends will have.
Well id have the money, but i dont want to have nothing after it if you know what i mean. As far as paying the loans off right away, not at $9/hour. I figure to use what i have now for books and girls (both very expensive), and leave it to a higher paying job when i get out for the loans.PhunkXJ said:

Cape-Boston is 1.2hrs plus traffic and 3-4 if it snows.
But if you dont want to, i guess youll just love the bus

No, no what i meant was that there is vey limited staff parking, and the students that live there that are not freshmen like i would be have trouble too. Freshmen that do live on campus (like me) are not allowed to have a vehicle. Its not just a wpi thing, a lot of schools wont if you are an on-campus freshman. Creeperjeep, because you were a commuter, you are allowed to park on campus and whatnot. I am not. Im not driving an ten hours a week just to go to college, living on campus is going to be an experience.
