What was your biggest mod mistake

my biggest mod mistake was snapping the other 3 rear shock bolts after the first one snapped.

That's not a mistake, it's a rite of passage.

Welcome to the club.

Well, for starters, they aren't quite as common as they are in Australia,so I can understand the "Why?" statement:D

I'll break it down for you:
4- Everytime folks would pass me on the highway,it was inevitable that the passenger in the car would give themselves whiplash staring at it.
3- It would snag low-hanging tree branches sometimes
2- My co-workers nick-named my XJ "Snuffelupticus",whatever that means, but I was certain it had something to do with the snorkel:D

1 - The absurdly ridiculous questions that I'd get asked relating to it,such as:
"Is that a camera?"
"Is that a radar gun?"
"Is that the exhaust?"-this one's especially funny,as the engine could be running, and they'd put their hands on it and *STILL* have to ask, anyway! I'd just reply "Yep! Space age PLASTIC exhaust!! You saw it here first" :D :D

I recall that 24" Schwinn Varsity 10 speed frame/ fork is a BAD platform to start a BMX chassis

:roflmao: That reminds me of my first "chopper":D We'd get some old forks off of a junk bicycle, cut the neck off,and hammer them up onto the bottom of the forks on our bikes, only with the curve pointing down instead of out! Double-length forks with a nice "s" shape to 'em. LOL!! Add some ape hangers and a metal flake banana seat and we were the shiat!! OH GOD I'M OLD   LOL!!!!

Yea, mike iv had a few of those stories too, its great to see how much of an idiot you can make these people look like. Just last week i was in the gas station and came out to find two guys starin at it and tryting to figure out what it was,..... i just laughed and said " is a periscope"

Now it makes sense.;) No problems like that here with snorkels even fitted straight from the factory on some models and most diesels that ever see a water crossing ( and plenty of I might one day do it crowd ). Always fitted along with the bullbar and UHF and AM aerials ready for the around Australia trip that never happens:rolleyes:

A. Thinking a 3" lift would be more than enough.
B. Buying stuff from the "new" Clifford Performance"...the absolute worst customer service possible
C. The puny welder.
D. Not calling Hesco first.
E. Not discovering NAXJA sooner.
F. Not checking my alignment because it drove ok.
G. Going through 3 stock front driveshafts.

Kudos Erik. This has to be one of the best threads I've seen. We not only get a little warning on a prospective mod, but we also get to see that we're all human, all but Farmer Matt of course.:D

My biggest mod mistake was when I was standing there watching the tire guys putting 31s on my wheels and saying "hope I don't regret not getting 33s". Got it home and said "Man, I shoulda bought the 33s".

DITTO!

Spending time and money on fender flares

Lifting it originally with an aal and blocks. That worked until I broke a leaf spring :o

Lifting it higher than I needed it to be and before I was fully prepared to have it at that height

Going with 33x1050 tsl radials, worst tire I have ever run

Not going with a SYE sooner

Selling it :(

I'll always be your hero!!

2 feet, 2 pedals, simple math.........Scott was crying on LHelldo about his stupid grindbox and 4:10's.......or at least that's what I heard over the constant re-starting of his stalling 4.0.............:D

Doesn't that mean you're driving an auto? :D

Ryan, why didn't you like the 33X10.50 Swampers? I run them here in the south and the traction is outstanding with them! :dunno: Best tires I've ever had on my XJ,IMHO:D

I can only answer for myself, but they suck in the rocks. It stops raining around these parts in April, and doesn't start again 'till November. That's a lot of dry rock. They tend to walk laterally a whole bunch and they were difficult to keep on the rim at low pressures.

Also, I threw two treads and warped another very badly in just under a year of use. I think it took over a pound of weight to balance them initially. The build quality of an interco can not compare to that of a BFG or Goodyear.

CRASH

I feel a lot better now. Biggest mod mistake was probably keeping the 30 up front and putting and ARB, gears, blah, blah, blah in it. Not spending the money on the first 700r4. Not rebuilding the LT1 when I put it in, not that it needed it, but more power.
On the list of stupid things I have done. Wheeling at night in a state park..... Jacking up the XJ with my hilift in the driveway too close to the house. Those things are tipsy.
There are more, those are just some of the memorable ones.

Well,I can agree with you on that note, but around these parts, the Swamper's rule the offroad terrain. They can be annoying on road, and you're right about the balance issues. I'm beginning to wonder what their quality control standards are for run-out,as two of mine have quite a bit of overly-obvious run-out:eek: It's also been unusually dry for the SE this year (compared to last year when it rained every trip out:D ). I can't say enough about them as far as offroading is concerned, though. They simply blow away any other tire I've ever had on ANY of my previous rigs. But I do understand the differences between here and there,as what works here won't work there, and vise-versa. I've seen several BFG's and G/Y MT's totally clogged with mud and lose any available traction instantly. Not that I like the mud or anything,in stark contrast to what most folks would think about me from my screen name or my location in the country,I HATE mud! But it's nice to know that if it's unavoidable, that I'll get through it with relative ease:D
