Thi wotld `ll somewhere in between the Buell and Cafe style bike (You could also ` fnr apl1000r(& Search around, a nice cne sho`d ret Xdu back around $3500-4000-this time of year you may get lucky

Okay, so the XJ is being replaced by a motorcyle for a DD. I live in Tucson, so I can ride all year if I feel like it. Here is my problem, I know the style of bike that I want, but don't know what Brand and model I should go for.

I have ridden my buddies Buell and another buddies 600RR, and like both bikes, but I really want cafe style bike.

So, what makes and models should I be tkaing a look at?

Buells are a sad attempt for harley to make a sportbike....they vibrate, leak and rattle just like a harley, and are really, just as slow....If your going to buy a sport bike, buy a sport bike...not a harley wrapped with a werid looking sportbike skin.


With that said, ive got an 04 CBR600RR and LOVE it....i traded my old 'busa for it and havent looked back. Its not as fast in a straight line, but toss some twisties in the equation and it holds its own and doesnt feel like the bikes riding you...its still PLENTY bike to get you into trouble though. Ive done a little bit of racing on it over the last year or two and done fairly well at the amature levels with it in mostly stock trim. Its comfortable enough to do a long ride on it and not feel like you have been physically assaulted. I did a 400 mile loop with some friends last year on it and could have easily gone more. The motor is smooth and screams with authority up to the 15K RPM redline...ive put a Jardine pipe and a PCIII on it to make it sound a little less like a sewing machine and pep it up a little bit. ..the exhaust note is very unique and almost F1 car like...always get lots of thumbs up from other riders. Out of all the street bikes ive had over the years, this one is HANDS DOWN the most enjoyable!!

that's a nice lookin honda, i would agree get a jap bike if you want a crotch rocket, suzuki's are good too. i have owned several jap bikes and all were pretty good. not sure about kawasaki, never owned one.

yeah but they are slow, a friend had one and i had a 82 suzuki gs450t

and i would beat him every time

at least its new i guess

OK, with a little work and a friendly dealer, you can turn a 883 into one screaming MoFO!
I baught an 883 from a guy who was making payments on it, no one EVER rode it.
1 year old and 10 miles on the clock.
I took it to the dealer and they turned it in to one fast MoFo!
110 HP and 115 ft/lbs of tourque!
It won the dyno drags in 1999!
Say what you will, but an 883 is a good base for an awesome build!
If you are going to buy a bike, buy a bike!
 
First off...to Jeffro...man that is one of the nicest looking CBR's I think I've seen. The blue looks fantastic along with the gray on the bottom. Wow.

I love the look of the Jap bikes (CBR, Gixxer, etc.). However, I don't find them to be very comfortable. I think you need to narrow it down more Fergie. The CBR is def. not in that cafe racer category. Do you want something new or vintage? I think the Ducati Monster comes pretty close to that cafe racer look with some mods. With a set of clip ons and ditch that stupid front half faring and they look hot. They are also much more comfortable (keep in mind...I've never owned a crotch rocket so that's why I say they aren't comfy for me...I assimilate it to a gin and tonic...it's an aquired taste). Here's a Duc that I think is very nicely done:

The Triumph Scrambler is a lot more traditional looking. This is twin carbed, 865cc, with an MSRP of 8 large.

I have owned a Suzuki Bandit 600, Ducati Monster 750, and a 600f4i. THe Duc was by far the most fun.
 
I really like the Suzuki Bandit 1200 S. There is a non S model that doesn't have the front fairing - that would be more of the style you're looking for. Depending on how tall you are the Bandit 600 may be a good bike for you too... Another nice bike is the Honda Hawk GT 650 - gobs of torque.
 
Styling is one thing, roadability is another. I had a Ninja 900 (factory fairing), that would do 170 MPH and was stable at that speed. Had a Kawa 600 that was great in the canyons. The Kawa 600 was a little small for me and took a lot of mods to make it comfortable.
I was never a fan of the star wars look, but heck the aerodynamics flat work. The faster I went the more stable it got. You could tell it was wind tunnel tested and was well thought out.
I haven't driven the newer Hondas. My old CBR 900 got a little wobbly above 120 MPH.
I test drove a kawa 1000 recently, seemed a touch on the heavy side.
A factory fairing, will generally beat the old style rounded types, hands down, at higher speeds.
IMO driving anything, anywhere above 80 MPH without a fairing is asking for some bruises or worse. The fairing not only helps the aerodynamics, it keeps the road junk, bugs and birds from ruining you whole day.
 
I vote for a Ducati if you consider yourself a "mature" rider...

The M900's a nice cafe...

but my heart's set on a 996 or 999...

I've seen and heard the Buell Firebolt and it's nice for it's intended purpose...

A Harley with knee draggin capability...

I'd buy a GSXR 1000 given the opportunity to DD...

But I'm the right size for one and have no chiropractic issues!

More like a rider with DEEP pockets....

Ducatis are expensive to maintain PROPERLY and if you break something on it, be prepared to take a second out on your house.

They are NICE bikes though.
 
Here's the theory...

I'm a two-wheeled maniac...

always have been...

from racing CR80's and 125's in the early 80's...

then moving to two stroke GP bikes...

then AMA Supersport...

I feel that in my late 30's...

I'll get into less trouble with a Ducati knowing what repairs and maintenance cost...

If I get a (Insert cheaper bike here) I'll just flog the hell out of it

One (only) good thing about Germany is no speed limits on the autobahn. I usually cruised at 120-130 MPH and used the motorcycle lane (the one between the fast lane and the guard rail) on a daily basis.
I finally stopped that, after a little old lady almost lost control of her VW from shock one morning. I was two hundred yards past her, when she finally reacted, freaked and almost lost control.
I had one of these stickers on each ass cheek and rode low.

Don't kill yourself and ride within your abilities. I've been through numerous schools and actually learned something, while making my insurance cheaper.
