What is the cargo load capacity on an XJ?

I just loaded up 103 2x8x16 cement pavers and 13 regular bricks into the back of my XJ.

It's a 1996 4.0 AW4 with a 5.5RE LA lift so my leafs are not stock (using the REs).

The guy at Lowes estimated 1500lbs.

The jeep drove fine other than my rear fenders were scraping the tires on any surface that wasn't flat and straight. The load was in there about 20-25 minutes and the jeep was driven about 2.5 miles. The rear end looks pretty normal, maybe a hair lower than before. The leafs/shocks are pretty new - less than a year.

Anyone know how much weight the back of my jeep would actually be rated for?

ETA I also had about 28 gallons of fuel (aftermarket steel tank w/ skid) and an aftermarket heavy duty rear bumper too.

dunno but when i was a kid we use to take my jeep now, and pack it with 5 people, load the back, roof, and a Bayliner and enough crap for a weeks camping and the jeep did fine, no bent D35 but when i lifted it there weresprings that were negative in arch. so they looked like an upside down U. With your RE springs, you will be fine with that kind of loading, ive loaded my RE 4.5 springs quite a few times with heavy loads.

You could check the owner's manual for load capacity. I'm thinking...just thinking that 3/4 of a ton is too much to carry...not too much to tow.

Just a thought....it's not a truck, you know!

My '86 Comanche with 4 cyl, 5 speed that I converted to 4x4 and lifted 3" (Grand Cheroke V8 front coils and the overload leaf from my '84 J10) had 6,000 lbs GVW when I crossed the WA border headed for Ouray in '02 (3 adults, camper top, tools, 5 gallons of water, 3 spare tires and lots of spare parts) We averaged 80 mph across the desert at night.
Sure it's a truck and not an XJ, but it's amazing how much these rigs can handle!

mjs were rated at 1475 Lbs Payload, unless you have a metric tonne, those were good for a whopping 2200.
Both are more than an XJ is rate for.

Watch your rear brakes for signs of leaking rear end seals (if you're running a D35). That much weight may have blown your seals :( Don't ask how I know.

The suspension is not what limits your capacity as much as what actually bears the load (in a semi-floating axle it is the axle shafts and bearings, wheels and tires).

Good luck.
