Speaking of food, did you setup our date yet? I'm at the restaurant right now, just redid the recipie for our tortilla soup. I leave for a month and they start messing things up. Geesh.

I hate it when i go out to a meet (whether it be racers, riders, or jeepers) and im the only one smoking. Agreed, it's not the healthiest hobby (and before you ask, it is definitely a hobby. Example A: `It costs lots of money, takes up a lot of time, clouds your mind when you can't do it, and some people just don't understand...just like Jeeps!) but it's a personal choice nonetheless.

Nothing against you Sparty....BTW, what restaurant do you work for? I only ask because I got my BS in Hospitality Management and managed restaurants for several years, so I know a good amount of the restaurant owners and chefs in the Dallas area, especially Denton.
 
My parents own Chili Gordos in Richardson on Jupiter and Arapaho. Its a Mex-Tex restaurant, family run (big mistake), been here for 16 years. Foods great, can be better, but I can't get my father's mind off of commercial quality and instead give what we know to make. It is a family style restaurant, why not give the best quality as if it where for ones family right?

I'm going to college in 7 months, but I'm still having trouble figuring out what to major in. I want to own my own restaurant one day to show the world what I can give, but idk what to major in. Hospitality and Manegement like you did, or a type of business degree? I mean, after that, I'm definately going to work for my culinary degree, its always been my goal, but that's second. What do you think?
 
Business/Management type degrees are always useful, but if you follow it up with a more specialized degree (like you mentioned a culinary degree perhaps) it becomes even more valuable. With a degree in both you would be a shoe in for many management positions in chain type restaurants, but it would really pay off if you were to open your own place. Lender's especially like to see that when you are applying for business financing. Anything you can do/have to ease their mind that their money is in good hands. It is always nice to be your own boss. If I were you I would make that my personal goal (I made it my goal years ago), and I am about as close I can get to it without actually achieving it now.
 
I'll be completely honest. If you have any inkling whatsoever that you might not spend the rest of your life in the culinary field, go for either a major in business and a minor in hospitality management, or but the bullet and double major in both. I got tired of the 70+ hour weeks and not seeing any of it come to fruition, so i got out about 6 months ago. I have had to start from the bottom in a new field, IT networking, whereas i might be able to get a mid-level position somewhere else if i hadn't jacked around and been dropped from the college of business.

NOW, i'm not discounting hospitality management at UNT. it is a GREAT program and even though you have spent 16 years at your family's restaurant, you will learn things you didn't even know existed, and even delve into the special events, hotels, and resort/club management side of things. i HIGHLY recommend it, but don't let it be your only path.

Question: so a plain business degree is more of a white collar type? Suitcase and tie type of thing?
 
Back to the topic at hand... "what bars do you like to frequent". Kurt was telling me about some bar he goes to all the time..... I think it was called something like "The ManHole" or something like. I told him it didn't sound like my kind of place so I'd probably never make it out there with him.

I know not to set my sight on one sole item, but it is my goal, and I do love the art. But, I have plenty of backups. Just in case you know. Could be a mechanic, a graphic designer, or join the either the armed forces or the labor force. But being in the restaurant business if my dream. I see it simple, as long as one starts off strong and pulls through hard. I talked to MM about the other day; about how people who "run" things in a laid back enviroment, don't make it.

at northern arizona university they offered a degree called hotel and restaurant management, they taught you all the basics for running both and it was a pretty well known program. I know alot of people who went through it and loved it, most got jobs right out the gate running hotels and chain restaurants with pretty good pay
 
i dont know of any bars in oklahoma, havent had time to visit the beer gardens but i enjoy all kinds of beer, and was lucky enough to pick up 4 bottles of arrogant bastard last time i was in dallas. I drank one the other day and it was SSSOOOOOO GOOOOOODDD made me melt into my chair and watch tv... I miss beer... Freaking oklahoma 3.2% moose piss.
 
sparty-not necessarily. it will get you experience in any kind of management situation. more of an umbrella-type degree. Of course, it is usually suited for the white collar type, but it can furlough into any type of management without pigeon-holing you.
