what gear/axle setup for my build?

Here's my scenario. I am starting to create a shopping list for what I will need for my project and wondering exactly how I should go about this. I will be running between 5.5"-7.5" lift with 35x12.5" tires. First off, can the stock D30 handle these tires, or does the axle need to be upgraded or replaced? Obviously the rear will be swapped out. I was pretty set on going with a 29 spline 8.25" rear, however I am told that 4.56's are the most that can be used with this axle, which are a little low for 35's, and this is a daily driver, so it will see highway use. On the other hand I guess if I got the D44 in the back, then it's maybe a tad stronger, but told I could run 4.88s front and back. Is this worth the difference in price to run a higher gearing?

I hate to say it brother, but search.

Try these. They're in the sticky above.

I have 35's on my dana 30 with the warn 5 on 5.5 hub conversion, allow inners, detroit and 4.88s, haven't had a problem and am planning on going ot 36-37s, just do some research and figure out what fits you best, everyones needs are different and what works for someone here may not work for you

When I bought my 35's, I was on a 29 spline 8.25 with 4.56's. The gearing was horrid on the road. I purchased a d44 and geared 4.88, its alot better.

Do it right the first time. ;)

4.88s or 5.13s

no, and it depends how much you upgrade your steering. :0

on stock steering I wouldnt go any bigger than 5.5" of lift or so and 35x12.5.

eh, i'd say its an option, but you will go through balljoints alot on the front end. Going bigger than about 35x12.5 you need to start looking at bigger axles, depending on your driving style and terrain.

Naaaa, Go mohawked 2.5s with wilwood pinion brakes and Orverson 2" 47 spline axles and locker. :confused1

You'll find many different opinions about what you can run with stock axles. Here is my 2 cents. If you are sticking with a dana 30, and its a DD, I would run 33's. I've had both 33's and 35's on my 30 with 4.56's. 35's and 4.56's are the greatest though you could get away with it. I personally wouldn't run 4.88's on a dana 30. For a dd, I'd go RE 5.5, 33's with 4.56's. Get some decent alloy shafts, and u joints, and you shouldn't have too much of a problem with the Dana 30. Also very streetable.
