What can cause these starting problems?

My 88' XJ is doing something funky. Occasionally, when I turn the key to start, nothing happens. After repeating this a few times, it will turn over. When it does this, I can hear an audible click coming from the starter, and the low hum of the fuel pump.
I tend to think that it is not my starter that is giving me this grief, but perhaps it's something else in the starting circuit.
Any ideas?

When the brushes in the starter get worn, the spring extends and tension is relaxed. The brushes make iffy contact. A good trick to rememeber, is if you hit the key and get a no start, a sharp wrap on the back of the starter with a hammer, will sometimes get you a few more starts.
Some other things to check are the, battery, battery poles, for cleanliness and tightness, the grounds and the starter connections.
I´ve had the bolts for the starter lossen and back out a bit, makes the ground for the starter and bendix operation, a sometimes thing.
Have heard many stories of grief from the ignition switch. Though I have been spared that problem so far.

naaaa, probably the ignition switch is worn out- being that old, I doubt it needs adjustment. Could also be the keyswitch itself if its rounded off and not shoveing the rod down far enough.

down on the lower column is a box with a plug harness- should be above your right foot, and kinda around the top- thats the ignition box. Its got a rod that go`s from there, up to the keyswitch. You turn the key, the rod moves, connections are made, and everythings happy.
Then they wear out- the inside of the box has a slider with contacts for various electric stuff- think keyswitch here- backwards is acc. forwards is start- your rotateing the rod, and slideing the slider down in the box along its contacts. Sometimes the blue wire will fry going into the box. this is caused by 2 simple things. Age, and toys. Too many toys run off the acc circut will melt the blue wire (could be any color-Ive run into blue mor often than not)- no acc, no start, no turn over, no nothing....unless you jiggle it...untill it melts completely.

If this be the case, and youve tested everything else includeing all the relays in the starting circut- head down to the parts store for a $9 or so new ignition box, specify auto or manual-their different, install and go. Might even spring for a new keyswitch-its probably going bad with age.

before you ask- the easiest way to install is to lay the drivers set back, put your head on the floorboard and feet to the headliner, and look up. If your quick, you wont get an anurism or have a stroke.

I had the same problem about 3 months ago. I replaced the battery, did little to nothing, then I replaced the battery wiring and then it was good untill now. It isnt the starter because I replaced that when I got it in Nov. I havent checked the igition box so I may try that beeing only about $10 bucks. So I would clean the battery connections and replace the wires if there bad, try that then check the ignition box. I hope this helps. I have a 1992 4.0

P.S. THanks Ed from north Ga. for the info on the ignition box

I don't think that it's my ignition switch. I checked it out last night, and everything checked out.
It could be the battery, it's just a 48 month from Sears...
I read somewhere that there is another relay somewhere on the starting circuit...

possibly- but remember the fuel pump. If it didnt kick on with the key then theres no juice heading to it(unless its fried).

I only offer this because Ive run into it more times than not. Actually, a few years back here at good old naxja, there was a sticky post that covered most of these common little problems, and their solutions- dont know where it got moved to, but I think it should be at the top of the forum.

basicness. If you turn the key and the fuel pump starts humming, but the starter wont engage nor click-either the ignition is bad(or relay/ballist) or the battery is so weak it wont fire. A starter not grounded/used up will do the same thing-but you start adding problems on top of problems then. Is it a bad starter, and a bad battery with enough juice to make the fuel pump run normally? Is the battery shorted enough so the amperage is high enough the fuel pump works only sometimes, and the engine starts normaly every other turn?

naaaa, I`ll stick with my original answer- Ive been wrong before, but it seems to me just like a bad sitchbox- intermittent.

and if I am wrong, I hope you find it.

I had this same problem. Occasional failure to start. All my cables are new and the battery also. At first, when this happened, I would short the contacts on the solenoid with a large screw driver and rnnn-rnnn-rrrn off we go! After a week of this happening maybe 3 times, this no longer worked. I thought it was the neutral safety switch. I usually do my own work but I had this one looked at. Turns out it was the starter. New starter-no problems. It's been six months. I wouldn't rule out the starter as a culprit. You can verify whether or not its the switch if you can catch it when it happens with a helper and a voltage tester at the solenoid.

Well, I really wanted to go wheeling tonight....
So, i stopped by Advance Auto on the way home from work to buy a starter.
I changed it in their parking lot. :)
I am glad to report that it has started fine all evening. Even after sitting in a deep puddle for 15 minutes while I was stuck...

If you are running an auto, the neutral safety switch can cause lots of headaches. I fought mine after my manual to auto swap.

yeah its probably the neutral safety switch, they get corroded and wont let you start. next time it happens, hold it to crank and with your other hand wiggle the shifter, if it starts right up its your NSS. ive gotta take mine apart and file off the corrosion and prob grease it up but it havent had the time
