Weight?

I suck at searching. I don't know if I use the wrong words or what but I can never find my answers.

I am trying to find out the weight difference between a late model Cherokee 4 door 4x4 and a 2wd.

Any one know off hand?

Here is my reason. I am kinda a sand dune freak and like to drive mine on the Oregon dunes. I use to be big into atv's and there go fast stuff. But as everyone knows people get hurt on them a lot so I gave them up and sold them several years back.

My new plan is to take my once DD 99 cherokee and making more dune worthy. maybe loosing the front axle and t-case for 2wd stuff to save weight and adding some 1300 size paddle tires. Maybe also down the road a 4.6l. I already have a 4.5" lift that I pieced together that for most part I like and 10" 255/70 5150 shocks. As it is right now it does rather well but there is always room for improvement.

I plan on keeping this thing for ever so to me the over all investment is not a problem with me. I was going to buy another one that was already 2 wd but this one only has 80k on it i am the 2nd owner. the only other problem I have thought of if I break it while I am at the dunes. I now flat tow it with my motorhome and use it when I am there to goto town for ice and such.

So back to the big Q's would it be worth converting to loose the weight or not? As it is now I hardly ever use 4wd with 31" mud tires and the paddles should make up for that.

If all your doing is dunes and gofast, go for it. Hit up Google, the weights shouldn't be too hard to find, it's usually a couple hundred pounds I'd imagine.

The tcase weighs about 75-90 lbs, and you have to factor the driveline, and the weight of a front drive axle vs a beam.

I'd say a couple hundred pounds, not to mention extra rotational drag.

From the site:
Curb weight 2wd = 2,891 lbs - 2,993 lbs
Curb weight 4wd = 3,057 lbs - 3,386 lbs
Minimal, but since it is already 4wd, I wold keep it that way. If you were racing, weight would probably make that much difference. It's nice to have piece of mind. If anything, pull your front shaft.

if i had to guess it'd be much more than that.

figure each rear door weighs a conservative 50lb each. i would only add 10 or 20lb to the front doors of a 2 door.

so say you have got an extra 70lb on a 4..... scratch that.

i thought you were asking about a 2dr 2wd...

(small differences may occur depending on optional equipment or trim level)
wheelbase = 101.4"
overall length = 165.3" - 168.8"
overall width = 67.9" - 70.5"
track = 58"
height = 64"
height with roof rack = 66.8"
ground clearance (from differentials) = 7.3" - 8.3"
approach angle = 37.6Ű - 38Ű
departure angle = 31Ű - 32.1Ű
breakover angle = 21Ű - 21.9Ű
curb weight 2wd = 2,891 lbs - 2,993 lbs
curb weight 4wd = 3,057 lbs - 3,386 lbs
cargo capacity = 71.0 cu ft

edit: if you feel ambitious roll through a truckstop scale.

depending on what all you already have and what you choose to remove you could stand to lose 600lb.

quite significant.

chances of you actuallly doing that are slim.

i would say you would be losing between 250 and 350 lb with a 2wd conversion.

edit again:

keep in mind with a 2wd swap, not only are you decreasing the total weight of the vehicle, you are decreasing the unsprung weight, which will be easier on components and also handle better

Thanks for the info.

I have already removed my drive shaft to put it in the back when I did my h&t front shaft in the rear conversion. I have never used 4 wd sence.

Sorry I have to bump a post if their to long I am on a iPad.

I scaled with all current mods plus my towbar and I was right at 3600lbs.

I was already thinking of unsprung weight. And the slim chance that I gut the whole thing may come true. When I was into the atv's a 375lb Honda 250R ended up at 174lbs with 1 gallon of methanol.

My problem is I get something in my mind and then things go south fast.
Right now I want to keep the stuff inside and the A/C is a must.

My wife just seen this post and told me. (O hear we go again, have something good and your going to make into another F-ing drag racing thing)

Now I am going to have to scratch the idea of a small block for another year.

But I did surf the local pic&pull today for a 2wd beam.

86 87 88 or 89?

got any pics?

my brother has an 88, 6" over swing arm, bored out, milled/o-ring'd head, lightened flywheel advanced timing, and NOS

its got a grim reaper air brush job on it.

pretty slick, wish i had some pics.

got a couple.

My Xj is used mostly at glamis sand dunes and I use the heck out of the 4wd. It gets around decently in 2wd but does so much better in 4wd. I find I climb hills much better in 4Lo than I do in 4 hi so you would loose that too. I guess with paddles you would not need the 4wd as much but you also start breaking things with paddles.

i RARELY use 4low in the dunes.

momentum is too much of a factor.

my brother runs paddles on the back of his 96 but he doesn't really get around any better than the rest of us.

I do a lot of sand driving on the blm beaches here, and 2wd would be horrible.

I guess 2wd is good for faster stuff?

I know for a fact mine doesn't move from a standstill in deep and unless it's in 4 wheel.

yeah 2wd is really useless in sand unless the conditions are perfect.

i think 4 low is a little on the useless side too but i guess for some smaller stuff where momentum was a non-issue it wouldnt be so bad.

I'll tell you now the difference between the 2wd beam & D30 is amazing to me. I'm converting to 2wd for the same reason as you.
I got a 2wd beam w/ knuckles & rotors & it was a breeze to lift. When I lifted my D30 with no knuckles & no brakes it had to have been @ least twice as heavy w/ no hardware on it lol. No exact weights though.
I can definetely feel the difference with just a beam up front.
Jeep handles alot better on & offroad, it doesnt nose over when I jump it & it goes over the whoops so much nicer. I'll be doing the trans swap this weekend, so I'll comment back on the difference.

I do have pics but there stuck on my old pc tower from about 5 years ago. I have since switched to iPad since my last pc laptop crashed. I will dig out some of my old equipment and post a few.

I forgot to tell you one of them was an 86 3 wheeler and the other was a quad.

Dave

Yea that was back before other companies made good plastic. My plan was to have it painted but that quad never got finished. It got Marvins on the front a bunch of be let stuff and raced about 5 times and sold. I then got some 450r's then sold them and got out of the sport. Everyone in my family got hurt so I thought it was time four them to go.
