Hey gang,

I knwo this is way off topic, but I am lloking for a few guys to join a fishing trip I have planned. This is a full day trip out of Newport Beach on Sunday. May 15th.

Please PM me or e-mail me @ [email protected] for details.

Thanks,

Robert

I have decided to post the info here so that I do not have to send the same thing out to several people.

This is a trip a friend and I planned as a "bachelor" day. I have been married for 10 years and my wife and I are renewng our vows at the end of May. We eloped when we got married and never had a ceremony. So we planned for our 10 year we would do the full blown thing. Family is coming in, we go tthe dress, tux, cake....the whole 9 yards.

Anyway, this fishing trip is planned. I have about 6 guys so far, including me and my dad. I have reserved (private party) a 65 foot boat (The Amigo). You can see it at www.newportlanding.com.

I have asked that be it men only, no children or women. The boat will leave at 7:00 AM on Sunday, May 15th and return around 5:00 PM. The cost will depend on the number of people that go. I have received $100 from everyone that is going so far. I have placed a $650 deposit to secure the boat. The $100 wil go towards the final price of ourse. The only other cost is for license and gear ($27) and food. We will utilize the galley on the boat for food and drink throughout the day, including breakfast and lunch).

It would be great if you can make it. I need to have a final count of people by May 8th.

Give me a call if you have any more questions 714-319-7135.

Thank you,
Robert

This is a private charter. Only the crew and my guest will on it. I have never been fishing like this before. You can see more info on the boat here:

I worked a few boats as a kid, some tips for you.
The deckhands and galley slave make their money on your tips. Be generous early...
Let the lead deck hand fillet your catch, and tip the guy.
Take a bottle, maybe a 12 pack, but buy at least some of your beer from the galley.
If you've never done this kind of fishing, leave your pole at home and rent.
Make sure you've got the right gear.

Word gets around the crew... the crew will tell the skipper if the charterees are cheap. Skippers get a real guilty consience if the charterees are generous, and your not catching much, they'll go out of their way to make the trip worth it. On the other hand, I've heard skippers say "F em" plenty of times... I've said it too.

Never been out of Newport, but on a boat that does not leave until 7AM, I'd say you won't be going out to San Clemete, Catalina is a maybe, but thats alot of wasted travel time during the prime time.

If you get a good skipper, he'll head for 30-60 fathoms first thing out for bottom fish. Maybe PV or Laguna. If your still going for bottom fish after about noon, you may be wasting your time, unless you go someplace like the Santa Ana River... for flaties. There are some other flatie beds in that area also.

Forget Salmon... it's sucked so far, and you'll probably not be rigged for them.

If you get lucky and catch the 2nd most ugliest fish in the world, a sculpin, make sure it's legal, and don't get rid of it! Tell the deck hand it's in your bag before he reaches in there. Sculpin spines are poisonous. I used to use a pair of dikes and cut the dorsal spines off of every one of them that came onboard.

Whites are pretty hot right now.

Now, one last thing. Flaties are nice to catch, and you'll be thinking about what a great dinner it's gonna be, but...

If you catch a flatie anywhere in the PV or the Santa Ana River area, just think about 2 things. One, it's a bottom feeder, and dweller. Two, the refuse and sewage and whatnot from the whole LA/Orange basin flows out to sea in these areas...

PS: One lastest thing. DON"T PUKE ANYWHERE ON THE BOAT, ESPECIALLY BELOW. If your sick, get to the lee (the side of the cabin house AWAY from the wind) rail, and puke over the side. Stay there till you feel better.

PSS: For something really different sometime, do a Hooka trip...

Darn it. Would have loved to dust off my pole :gag: and catch another 'cuda (yummm), but I will be up at SF area that day, attending my niece's graduation. Wonder if she would notice her uncle's absent!

Will you do this again I hope?!

Not sure. This is my first time doing this so we will have to see. It's not terribly expensive, especially if you get 10 or more people in on it.

I hope to get more reponse. Regardless of the number of people, the trip is on.

Thanks,

Robert

Thanks for the pointer. That is something I did not know. Is there an amount to consider? I do not want to offend the gus and I want to have a great experience.

I opted for the galley. No coolers allowed. We can ask for types of beer and request for certain food. Breakfast and lunch.

They offered a 6:30 start time, but a few guys are coming in from Corona.

Mostly off-shore, hopefully closer to Catalina.

Thanks, Robert

A good rule of thumb is 15% in the galley. Of course, sticking a wad of singles, say 10 bucks or so in the jar first thing will go a ways to greasing the attitudes. Be polite to the galley slave... it's a crappy job on a boat. If the action is not reciprocal, speak up, tell them (usually a she) their attitude is gonna determine what the tips look like at the end of the day.

The no cooler rule is getting pretty common I hear. I've done trips where no one bought a single thing from the galley... The backlash is fairly high prices.

Also, I've done trips out to, say, Cortez Bank, where the group was totally drunk when the boat left at 1:00AM the first day out, people puking in the bunks and generally making a mess. Get out there at prime time, and nobody fishing, all hungover and sick.

No greasy stuff for breakfast or lunch. Stick to sandwiches for lunch. A good hamburger always sounds nice, but mix that with more than a few beers, a mild swell, diesel exhaust, etc... and the greenies will be chummin. Ginger Snap cookies are good for sea sickness, take some with you.

The deck hands will be doing your rigging, clearing lines, and assisting with getting floppers (fish) onboard. If one clears your lines, and gets your fish onboard, give him a couple of bucks.

At the end of the day, heading back in, is when you want to fillet any fish you have, and weigh in for a jackpot if you set one up. It's easy to tip too much here, but just ask the guy how much he wants to fillet your bag. If it sounds too high, make an offer.

The water is not that warm out in the channel yet, but if you do get lucky and get a good yellow tail, get the deck hand to fillet it right away. Take one side into the galley and have them do a double sear, just sear the outside, no more than a minuet a side. Break out the wasbi and soy, and make sure the crew gets some.

Another thing. BANANAS ARE BAD LUCK ON A BOAT. If you see any in the galley, ask that they at least put them under the counter so you can't see em.

Thanks again Ron for all of your advise.

I need to provide a manifest to the charter company this week.

Please PM me with your name and address if plan on going (or think you will go).

here are the details:

Return to port around 5:00 PM

Thanks,

Robert

OK, time is running out. If you are going, please PM me your name and address so I can include it on the manifest.
