Does anyone have a spare rear drive shaft for my 89 xj, with 4.0, aw4, and np231...
anyone have one? i have looked at some xj driveshafts lately and they all have a different yoke! what i really need is the yoke because mine is so worn out it has a lot of slop. So, it seems like my yoke is longer than some ive seen...a little deeper from where the u joint is installed to the splined part...maybe its just different for the np231.
ANyone have something?

I have never seen different yokes.......I might have a yoke in my garage from when I did the SYE let me look around and I will let you know

I got one too. Pulled off a 96.

hmmm....would you guys do me a flavor? go measure the distance from where the yoke hooks into the pipe, to the u-joint center caps. That would let me know if i have some oddball yoke or not. thinking yours might have to have come from an xj with an np231 for it to be right, but im just taking shots in the dark right now. Thanks everyone!
Also, i would need one that wasnt warn much and didnt leak when it was pulled...Thats why im replacing mine in the first place..i replaced the seal and the cone bushing, still leaks, so it must be the yoke.
Anyway, Meausrements anyone??? thanks a bunch!

Does your DS fit into the tranny? If so, mine won't work for ya.

Ok, so heres the update. I rolled around under several xj's in the yard today and none are the same as my yoke. Someone must have installed this deeper yoke to make for better u-joint clearance. So, im left with the delema of putting money into this leaky sucker, or trying to find an sye and then buy a whole new DS.
Frank, is your shaft made for someone with an sye?

hmmm...swing by, im in junction. :)
Yea, i have the slip yoke still... but im here searching for details on the hack n tap thing.
First of all, what exactly do you get in a kit and where did you get yours?
Second....can i manufacture mine or is it worth buying?

Conjunction Junction?:)

Try this thread...

I used the Spicer 211229x flange, Got locally, and a RE H&T kit. I picked up a front DS from A-1 Recycling for $15

Let me ask this a different way. Does your drive shaft have a yoke that actually goes into the transfer case? If so a hack and tap kit won't work. You'll need to replace the output shaft, Advanced Adapters would be the way to go.

Mine does not. It simply slips over the shaft outside the transfer case.

hmmm....maybe im not using my termonology correctly: my ds is hooked to the yoke which has a splined tube on it that goes through a seal and over an output shaft on my np231. Not sure what other designs there are out there???

For all y'all 96+ owners who are trying to describe the rear output, don't forget that the t-case output changed that year. Original poster has an 89, so there's a mechanical difference..

This is the part you're talking about, right?

That's the RE1822, but you can also use a YJ yoke - or I'd recommend a slip-yoke eliminator (SYE) to seal up the rear of the t-case and also strengthen that area up.

Yes, thats my problem part.
But heres what im thinking. Call me crazy, but i want to bolt the yoke directly to the output shaft and then get a drive shaft made with a slip in it.
-Im thinking all i would have to do is fill the end of the slip yoke (above) with a spacer (becuse the shaft ends just behind the seal in the cone) to put the yoke just outside of the seal and then drill through the end into the shaft, tap it, and bolt it up.
Then add a drive shaft and bingo, cheap way to eliminate my slip yoke for now.
Bring on the critique???
:)

Jimmi...mines not gonna help ya either man. Sorry. Hope you figure it out.

Wrong RE has a H&T kit for the older style 231's, little more costly, but they have one.

PM sent. I think I have one, need to look.

SO no feedback about just bolting my existing slip yoke in place and getting a slip shaft made???? thought i'd hear about that one. Anyone done this maybe?
