My trannie took a turd and I need a new transmission. I am going to be converting from and ax-15 to an aw-4 and need all the parts for it...let me know if you have one. David

What year is your Jeep? Funny, I just blew up my AW4 for the 5th time and I'm swapping in a manual. I guess to each his own. Too bad you are so far away from me, we could do some part swapping/trading. Might still be a possibility if you want to ship. PM me if you are interested. Good luck.

I will let you know, I am still checking around, might still go with my manual...anyway, Hopefully this will work out...

Could you get me a price shipped to 89503? I bet shipping would kill the deal...maybe it will work out though...

man you in RENO? I thought in SO CAL NP though, I am going to Overton Nevada on March 23rd and would be willing to meet ya little north of that to help out like out to warm springs junction of 6 and 375, That way shipping would only be your gas to get there and back.

So you will need:

AW4 transmission
torque converter
trans cooler lines
use an aftermarket trans cooler
bellhousing
adapter for trans to np 231 or 242
flexplate
starter (maybe) not sure
wiring harness for trans and tcu
TCU (puter)
shifter + bracket
downshift cable
driveshaft (maybe)not sure
I will make sure to save all nuts and bolts too and include

anything Im missing? by the way all this is stillin a running but wrecked xj. I drove it to its final wresting spot in my yard LOL

260.00 delivered to warm springs, NV on the 24th or 25th Thats about 400 miles from my house. LOL

Yeah, the AW4 is a pretty strong, stout, and dependable tranny. The only think I can think of for repeated failure is water getting in there, but that's with all trannys. My 91' XJ has 206K miles on the AW4 and is still running strong. The AW4 is a Toyota tranny similar to the one used in the fast Toyota Supras, just the Supras has a heavier duty version to accomodate the extra hp. As people know, Toyotas are very dependable. The 4.0L/AW4/231 is a great dependable drivetrain that will last a long time, many times over 300K is given routine maint and not allowed to get too hot.

I guess I'm just hard on the trans. How would I suck at maintenace if the trannies never got more than 10K miles. :dunno: Just about the time to change the fluid, it would wipe out the front pump again. The problem is either a bad flexplate, ot a mismachined block or crankshaft. Basically I have lost all faith in auto transmissions in my XJ. Remember, there is a reason they call them slushboxes.

That would be great, but I am going to need it sooner than that, I guess I will keep looking, thanks though...

The reason would be the person driving them? J/K Let me tell ya though if you are having probs with the auto because of the more ridgid set up of teh manual they will last even less time. I think you need to fix the underlying problem before you make drastic step backwards

I just picked up a 89' XJ 5 speed manual, and man I have been spoiled with my auto. I do like manuals, but for rock crawling the AW4 works great. Just do the "1-2" mod to seperate the 2 gears and the torque converter lock up and it is great. Brian, you really need to look at what is going wrong to go through 5 AW4s. I just sold my 89' with 230K miles, and my personal rock rig, my 91' has 206K on it. If you do go with a manual, spend a little more and get a NV4500, or a little less and get a NV3500 from a newer TJ. I think from 00'+ or so which is better than a AX15.

an AW4 is a great way to get cheap crawl, that's why I did it. from when we talked, I remember you saying you're on a major budget, also. if you want to keep a manual you could consider a T-18 as well. They have a 6.32:1 first gear, and no overdrive, so you could use junkyard axles with 4.10s. It has it's pros and cons, but something to consider.

Not on a major budget any more, the wife got a real job. ;) What do t-18's come in? I am not familiar with them. What year did the 23 spline t-cases come in? Thanks again...

t-18s are older truck trannies and might require floorboard trimming/pounding but are relatively easy to mount to the 4.0 and 23 spline t-cases. if budget is getting thrown out the window get an NV4500 into an Atlas and just be done with it :D

Man, am I glad I have you to look out for me. :gag: Most of the parts in question will be replaced during the swap. What am I supposed to do, keep swapping in AW4's and replacing possibly good parts based on an educated guess? Sorry, I have changed out more than my share so far. Besides, I have seen quite a few AW4s go bad, and not just in my junk. Drastic step backwards? Why do you think that, because you can't drive a manual? Too much effort and concentration while on the trail? I think I have a bit more experience wrenching and driving than you give me credit for. 3 of the transmissions were bad rebuilds by MOPAR and blew up within 500 miles of installing them. I personally tore them down and saw what the failure was. So I guess that only makes 2 blown up by me, still not great, but different than 5. Thanks again for looking out for me, I really need more friends like you. :bs:

Chill Boss that aint how you posted info before. maybe a little more info would be nice.. And as for driving a manual I got my liscence in one and have always owned one since 1978. it is a drastic step backward for trail use. Loss of torque multiplication, ability to use brake and gas at the same time efficiently. I learned to wheel in a FJ55 3 speed and then an early bronco, then nissan all manual trans.
