Been looking for a while now, the few decent looking ones I've found in the area have turned out to be POS's in one way or another, or $8,000 at dealers. Don't mind some mechanical issues, I would even be happy to do a 4WD conversion on a nice 2wd. Mainly don't want rust. Around here "surface rust" seems to mean missing rockers and structural carpet. Would prefer power options, cruise, AC. Tell me if I'm delusional, but I think a $3500 budget should get me a pretty decent vehicle, of course I would prefer to spend much less.

Tell me what you find, if I need you to check it out for me I'll make it worth your while.

Thanks!

RedHeep keeps telling me about good stuff down by him...might have him do some looking or some of the out west guys if you can find something that you could fly in and drive home. You could buy a bunch of the giveawayxj tickets too :)

Almost everything here is the same as you describe for you.

If you find something near the Ft Wayne area or even NW Ohio, let me know and I can go look at it for you.

Yeah, the XJ market has had me thinking about the similarities to the early Mustangs for a while now. I owned 5 different 60's Mustangs from around '79 to the early '90s. Like the XJ, they were a very popular, pioneering unibody vehicle with good power, zillions made, fun to drive, easy to repair. When I started with them, there were tons of them in the junkyards and I could find almost anything I needed. By the time I finally fully restomodded my '66, there was nothing left in the junkyards, and now something that should have been junked years ago will sell for a ridiculous amount.
My '94 2-door 5-speed Country is probably a fairly rare model, but I think it's just too rusty to bother fixing. So I'll probably see one selling for $30k at Barret-Jackson ten years from now.

There was a 99 XJ with 110k on a lot here in town last fall, rockers were rusted out, interior wasn't in that good of shape and no clue on the floor boards. We were looking for a cash purchase for my wife. I asked the dealer about it and he said that it was sold. I asked what he sold it for and he told me 5k! I then asked about the 5.9 ZJ he has on the lot...

P.S. TJs are almost becoming more affordable than the 97-01 XJ...

Wow, that's amazingly low mileage! Unfortunately, doesn't appear to have cruise, and there's no mention of it being 4x4, nor do the pictures show any evidence of that. You would think they'd mention it, but then again, I'm frequently amazed that people leave out some of the most basic and important info.

I even forgot to mention that I'm not fond of white :dunce:
Unless it's a Limited with all white...

After looking at a couple more that looked fantastic in the pictures, I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not going to find a non-rusty one around here, that's within my budget, so I'm having a friend in Colorado find one for me. I have frequent flyer miles and hotel reward points, and a couple hundred bucks in gas should get me home with a truly rust free jeep.

I have a 99 limited white, black leather, I believe every single option, 96K, rock stock, even has the original snowflake spare to match with factory tire never on the ground...LOL...I dunno if you want it we could work that out, I dont need 3.

So......... John......... did ya find something? Did ya? Huh? Huh? What'd you get? Come-awn!

:D

Yeah, I guess I should update this thread, even though I'm still looking for another one to replace my 94. Troy (Yellaheep) found me a really nice 98 Limited with zero underbody rust and overall good condition. A few minor mechanical issues, some of which he fixed for me to make my 1000 mile drive home enjoyable.

Since this one is too nice for me to use as a work truck, it will be Cindy's new daily driver, and her 99 will be the new trail rig. I don't plan to build the 99 any further, and actually plan to make it more street friendly than it currently is.

Left Troy's house about 3:30ish, drove to Grand Island, Nebraska and got some sleep, headed out about 7:30 in the morning in dense fog, and got home about 5:30. Jeep rode and drove great, no problems, 19.2 mpg average at 70-80 with the AC on all the way.

Had to wash a thousand miles of bugs off it, with a little help from the granddaughter...

that's a nice looking ride john!

175k-ish miles, about 18k on new motor.
