ok well i am doing a whole 4.0 and interior swap in my MJ and in the process i pulled the old dash and threw it in the garbage. well the vin plate was still attached, am i in a bad situation or can i re vin it? get a new vin tag? or is there another vin DEQ can use when i go in for emmisions?

NO!!! You should not have touched it. It is illegal to tamper with or remove a vin tag. Go to your local DMV, they will tell you what you have to do. If you can prove that the car is yours, they will probably issue a state vin.

There SHOULD be multiple vins on the vehicle.
I believe there is a copy of the VIN on the door sticker. (either on the door itself or in the door jam.)
And i'm sure there's at least one on the body somewhere (stamped)
These will lock your title to the vehicle, but I'm sure there's gonna be a good deal of paperwork in your future.

doors are replaceable, parts are inter-changeable. The main vin plate (attached to firewall), legally the one that must remain on the vehicle is the one you lost. It is illegal to tamper with it, its illegal to make new ones and its illegal to swap them. Varying from state to state there are different things that may happen. You may be able to contact the dmv for a state issued vin or you may contact them and get your rig taken. It is something that is not looked at very well by the thugs in authority. I don't know what the options are exactly, if it happened to me I would rock out that rig til I couldn't anymore. then part it and scrap the rest.

DMV can assign you a constructed vehicle number and title. You just have to have a bill of sale and receipts for the parts used. I guy I work with just did it, he made two chevy trucks into one.

Is this your legal opinion??? :)

Its FEDRAL OFFENCE to tamper with VIN tags.
I don't think this falls into that category. You simply made a mistake. All the paperwork matches your name, and the sticker on the firewall matches your name. Just go down to your local DMV and tell them what happend. All will be fine.

I brought in a 79 F-350 That I had rebodyed I went to the state cops with all my recites for the body work and walla I had a new title. Non of the body parts matched my frame, not one.
The frame was however titled to me.

Now if you took a vin tag say off one Cherokee and put it on another one, now your talking trouble. Its the same as rolling back your odometer.

I've seen similar situations (in other states) not end well. I did look it up and found the same.

Best bet call the dmv.

There is no way to swap the dash without tampering with that one. I wouldn't worry about it personally if you aren't selling it. If you aren't being shady no one is ever going to check. I have been pulled over at least 20 times and have never had a cop check the vin.

there should be two more vin tags one on the cowl and one on front frame below the core support. vin tampering is illegal but for all we know the old dash on could have been damaged thats why theres always more than one.
