Venting

Not really sure what forum this goes in, so I'll try here first. I just got it all together, lift on, gears installed, and then put rear driveshaft on with SYE. So I think everything is going fine, right. Only in a perfect world On my way to lunch today, the jeep starts to vibrate really bad and then BANG. I stop as soon as possible and loo underneath. And the rear yoke nut loosed up and the yoke worked its way out of the axle. After getting the rear driveshaft off and then driving CAREFULLY to the shop that installed the gears, I am back at work. They said their going to look at it and get to it as soon as possible. I told them it better be before the end of the day. I hope that all thats needed is to tighten the nut up, didn't hear any vibs or metal to metal contact, so maybe theirs hope.

I'd be just a little torqued at that as well.

No reason I can think of that the pinion nut would back off unless it was either never torqued properly after the gears were installed, or the pinion nut won't lock any more.

I hope you tightened the pinion nut down before you moved it when the d/s came loose.

I have the feeling that he drove it with no nut on the pinion, and the driveshaft inside. If that the case I would worry about gear, pinion, bearing, seal, and possable case damage.

yeah guys unfortunately, I couldn't get the yoke back on the pinion. I tried for like 10 minutes. I drove very carefully and very slowly. the shop was only about a 1.5 miles away and I didn't reach 20 the whole way. I really wish I didn't have to, but at that point, didn't have a choice. Now that I look back at it, it was really stupid, but I kinda wasn't thinking straight at that point.:anon:

Well, without the pinion nut, there's nothing to locate the pinion gear fore and aft. Obviously, you didn't lock things up.

The real gearheads may weigh in at some point with an opinion, but I'd be leary about those gears now.

I would have them install ALL new parts in the diff.

Warranty EVERYTHING for a longer time to make sure all is well.

Again Thanks for letting me vent. Unfortunately, they were aftermarket parts, and I had them installed at a local service shop, that specializes in drivetrains, just called, I am about to go see what happened, said its all done and everything looked fine, But we'll see.

Aftermarket parts? Do mean something like non-OEM gears, aka, Yukon? Or do you mean used parts?

Get it all in writing, warrenty, repair for loose nut, everything.

Yeah they were yukon gears. Got the service repair in writting. I guess the nut didn't come with any sort of lockite on it, had lock washer. So they tore it apart checked everything, and put lockite on the threads and punched the nut in four spots to "lock it" on the threads. I got their word in writting that if something else goes around that they will repair it and pay for 75% of the costs. That tooks some "talking", but I guess its fair, considering that they didn't supply the parts. I am just happy that its back on the road. Its been a very "bad" week.

"Punched" the nut? Yeah, I understand that........ but it means you need a new nut. I'd be surprised if they got it right. Too much punch, and it'll ruin the threads on the pinion shaft. Not enough, and you're back in the same situation. I called my friendly local Jeep parts pusher for a price, $8.35.

I replaced the yoke on my 8.25, and I do not remember a lockwasher on it. Or on a friend's 92 YJ (D35) with a cracked yoke either. In both cases, the orignal nut was used, no Loctite either. The YJ was done 3 years ago, I did mine a little over a year ago.

In retrospect, I didn't pick up on the fact that you supplied the parts to the shop, that would certainly make a difference in how the shop will stand behind it's work. Still, it should have been apparent that the nut had a non-locking problem as soon as they started to spin it down.

Personally, I'd get a new nut.

Even without punching the threads (which I've never seen done), the pinion nut is supposed to be torqued to something like 250 or 275 foot-pounds. If it was torqued to that spec AND had a lock washer under it, there ain't no way it loosened up and backed off all by itself.

I think the shop forgot to torque it.
