Vacuum Cannister

Okay i was about to relocate my vacuum can in my 98 xj. I saw a thread where one person just removed it and put a plug on the end. Couldn't I just do that? As long as theres no leak, I should still have vacuum. Or is there a reason why the vacuum can is there. Seems like a dumb question, but like i said I read about someone just plugging it there. Thanks in advance

What I did on my low option 87 was move it to the firewall eliminating 5 or 6' of both sizes of vacuume line. You definitly want to keep the cannister, without it you're vents will be stuck in the defrost position among other things.
 
A vacuum canister is a vacuum resivoir (sp?). It provides vacuum during times of low vacuum on the engine. If you don't have it, you can lose your AC and heater when pulling a hard hill or under acceleration or heavy load. The best replacement canister is actually from an 84-86. It looks like a 1 pound coffee can and has the one way valves and everything, along with a good mounting bracket. It is ideal and can be mounted many ways and places.

Yup, same here. Pretty much a no-brainer.
 
If you have to move it from cutting out your fenders or installing an aftermarket bumper, it's easy to move.

The canister itself should be held on with some type of screws/mounting brackets. Take these screws out and let the canister dangle. Now look at where each vacuum line goes (my 89 has 3 lines and my 93 has one line). Now remove the vacuum lines (they pull off/out). The vacuum lines are secured to the frame by zipties, cut them. Now you should be able to pull the lines back up from where they go through by the battery, leaving you enough line to mount the canister anywhere on that side of the engine bay.
 
Okay, I am finally going to ask this. I do not have a vacuum canister on my truck. I have one I got with a replacement bumper but it is not installed as I didn't have any extra vacuum line at the time. My heater works great, the vents function in every possible configuration, my cruise works, and my AC did work last summer. The AC isn't working right now but I assumed is was the infamous evaporator. I have wondered in the past but not asked, what am I losing not having a canister? Everything that anyone has mentioned in other threads works.

The guy that owned it before me cut the lines and plugged them with...sticks of wood. I know, I plan on changing that but I figure the cruise is working great so I must not be losing any vacuum. Could this missing canister be the reason my AC doesn't work? I know it worked last summer when I bought the truck so I assumed it was not related.

I haven't put the new/used canister in because I have not figured out which of the three lines goes where, he cut them near the battery. If this is why the AC isn't working does it matter where the lines are connected or can I just put a hose on each nipple? I figured since there are two sides and one has two nipples that two lines had to go together. Help me please.
 
I can't help you on what lines go where, but on my 89 XJ the cruise control has its own vacuum bottle, mounted on the firewall, so that might be why your cruise works fine. The heater should still work with no bottle, but do your vents switch correctly between floor/dash/defrost vents? I had a leak in my vacuum line and it was stuck on floor vents and my windows never defrosted last winter.
 
Yea, all my vent settings work fine. I don't really know of anything that doesn't work properly except the AC does not blow cold, but I'm sure it did last summer. Maybe there are systems that pull off this vacuum that I don't know about that are effected, but everything that has been mentioned on this website works great.
