VA Wheeling Spots

A while back (maybe a year ago) a small trail ride was organized on the North Atlantic Chapter forum for the GW National Forest near Staunton, VA. Skorpyo and a few others from Northern VA, and SW VA were in attendance as well as myself. I'm trying to figure out what the name is of the area we wheeled in and how to get there. Or better yet, does anyone know of any other legal areas in VA?

The trip was before the invention of the Southeast chapter, so I figure I'd post here and see what happens. The VA wheelers seem to fall in the cracks between the North Atlantic and Southeast Chapters.

Thanks

The popular ones to go to are Shoe Creek, Big Levels, and Dictum Ridge..

Kevin:

I was on that ride (JAN 02!) and the trails we took that day were near Rawley Springs off of US 33, west of Harrisonburg. Of the list that XtrmXJ mentioned - Dictum Ridge sounds familiar. Sorry, can't remember the names of some of the smaller roads we used to get to the first trail (but I can visually remember how to get to them - no help for you though). We met at a country store in Rawley Springs on 33. To get to the morning trail, we drove back east a short distance and turned north a few miles. The ones in the afternoon started on 33 and were to the west a bit from the store.

Try shouting for Hunter - he led that day.

Hey there. Yeah that was at the George Washington National Forest (GWNF) and the store Mike is referring to is McDormans. They're not as wheeler friendly as they used to be, infact they were flat out rude to us last time I was there so not many people meet up there anymore. It's not far outside of Harrisonburg, VA so if you can find a map you should be able to spot the area. That or look up McDormans on yp.yahoo.com.

Hope that helps!

Only trail shut down in GW currently is Dictum Ridge and that depends on the day. The entrance (or exit) near Rt. 33 crosses private property and the owners sometimes have it blocked off. I know last weekend it was closed, but a few weeks ago somebody rolled a Full-Size Blazer.
