URGENT, help me get to JV next weekend, need 23 spline np231 t-case

My t-case sounds like HELL over 35mph. This sucks and makes no sense at all. It's a very faint sound with no driveline in, but put the driveline in and it sounds like someone is taking a weedwhacker to the inside of the case. What really frustrates me is that it never made a sound before, then it sits for a month, and all of a sudden it's pissed off. Driveshaft angles are fine, and I've tried about 30 different combinations of angles and ride height, and though it makes slight changes to the noise, it doesn't even come close to getting rid of it. A stethescope isloates the sound at the t-case, but doesn't help isolate the sound within the t-case. I have been beating my head against a wall on this for 4 days straight, and have probably spent a good hour talking with Jesse at High Angle.

The only thing I have left to try is a new t-case. My current one is from a 94 with 4.0 and automatic. The interchangeable years should be 91-95 behind the same engine and tranny. Anyone have one lying around or seen a 91+ XJ at a Pick N Pull lately?

if you need parts and want to drive to Benicia, i got a parts t-case with everything but an input bearing in the side yard - off a 99TJ with an auto

everything but the external case is good... (blew it up)

also have both style mainshafts (old and new)

if you are interested...

planataries, shift colar, pump, chain, mainshaft, 96+ tailcone, mode selector all there...

if noting else turns up - its yours if you think it will help you...

EDIT: have input bearing too - but its in NE - can ship it you you...

taken your case apart yet?

Brett, it's likely just the output shaft bearing, which is pretty simple to change. Get one, you'll probably need it anyway. I'm assuming you isolated that it isn't a very badly stretched chain, which should pop loudly as it skips teeth in 4wd on a hard surface.

Good luck, bro'

Bearing Supply in Downtown Sac will probably have one on the shelf.

I saw a 95-96' XJ at PNP in South Sac and 1 or 2 in Rancho Cordova a few weeks ago. They should still be there. I've seen at least a couple 95-96' XJs as well as 91-96' years. You could check there 1st because they have cheap prices and you can get spare stuff for you case with anything you don't need at the moment. Also these are dd XJs and shouldn't be that abused. If you don't find 1 there, which I doubt there are plenty of shops in Sacramento to help you with your needs including the 1 Billy mentioned. Good luck Brett.

When i was going there to pick up parts, bearing supply closed this year. Unless somthing has changed, they're out of business.

if you are in a real bind for the output bearing - there is a company called Bearing Engineering in Benicia, CA and they have just about every timken/torrington bearing in stock and have a 2 day turnaround on custom bearings...

located on East 2nd Street and Stone Road (right near the 780/680 split)

anyway best of luck

I've got a couple of complete 231 cases, '91 or '92, auto, 23 spline input.

Check the bearings first, then let me know.

PS: You'll hate the color. :D

Any auto parts store should have the bearing......not a big deal. I got 'em at Car Quest.

Riebes here in Chico had the output bearing. I am in the middle of swapping it, but now I have to go to my parents (90min drive) for the evening. I'll know if it worked tomorrow, if that doesn't do it.... I dunno... tempting to just try and drive it down anyway... If I decide against driving my truck down, I'll at least drive my car down so I can at least hang out.

HAHAHA well you could drive to my house then we could take the Rubicon. No way we would be takin your HONDA into the lakebed.

Oh, and a unknown source said "get back to work and get off the net!"

I was told motorhomes can make it to the camp easy, if that's the case then my Honda would be no problem. We could take your Rubicon too, but they you might be tempted to scratch the paint :D

regardless, it aint gonna happen, I'm gonna get my junk going. I am.

PS: That one comes with a matching shaft... and sheathed no less. You'll never want to consider a square shaft after this one. :D

Come on Brett. You have to take advantage of this huge NAXJA run and get some wheeling in. I wish I could make it down there, but with my mom here at my place I cannot...and I already wheeled Hollister and the Rubicon back to back weekends. See if you can maybe swap in a whole new case or just the bearing etc what you need. Make it happen or you will be kicking yourself for missing it. I know I'm bummed about not going. Hope we get this thing going next year. Don't give up.

I have some 231 t-case stuff that I got from the previous owner of my XJ. I have a 23 spline output shaft, stock slip yoke cone, 96'+ short slip yoke with bearing, and the back of the case with a bearing in it. I'll try to get some pics of what I have. Can you take a pic of what you need or find 1 on the net to post up? I might have it, otherwise you have the other options of getting it from Capt, going to pnp, or going to the parts stores. I hope you get it in time for JV, I know you've wanting to do those trails for a long time.
