Front DS and T-Case noise

Still no update on my clanking/rattling T-Case noise. I've been busier than hell with work so I haven't had the time to take it apart. I did contact a local shop here in Vegas that stocks 231 parts. So I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I'll post pics... who doesn't like pics?

Finally got around to dropping the t-case but I have not impact tools and taking the front yoke nut off is F-ing up my day. I tried putting some 2" angle iron in between the yoke and the housing as a block but its not big enough. Annoyed. I'll hop back on it tomorrow for round 2.

I took mine to a shop I use, they popped the nut in 30 sec, without taking it out of the pickup truck

Something else you can try, when I was reassembling I used a couple of long class 12.9 8mm bolts in the yoke, and wedged a cheater pipe in between them. Still had enough room to get my socket on the nut. Bent the hell out of the bolts.

Fantastic idea. I tried gripping the yoke with a big ass wrench but it kept popping off and chewing the yoke up a little bit. Cosmetic but still pissed me off.

I cant wait to move out of an apartment and into a house again so I can get my garage game back up. :)

a large pipe wrench will grab the yoke and stay.

it's how I do axle ones that aren't in a jeep.

My buddy came by today and dropped off his air compressor and impact gun... stupid yoke nut came off within 5 seconds.

On to my findings, the plastic pieces on the shift forks were destroyed. There were crumbled pieces of them EVERY WHERE. The shift forks themselves had a very little wear on them where the plastic pieces sat, but not too much.

The chain seemed to have a little slop in it as well. Not sure if that's normal or not. I cant remember how loose/firm my chain was when I did the SYE over 2 years ago. So I'm going to take the chain to the transmission shop tomorrow where I'm buying replacement parts to see if they measure it or something.

Lastly, I think I may have run that transfer case pretty low on fluid. Not much drained out of it (a little less than a quart) and the fluid was a little rusty colored instead of the normal blood red. I'm positive that played a role as well.

More to come tomorrow.

So upon further inspection, I realized that my chain was loose and rubbing on the bottom of the case right next to the filter. The wear mark isn't bad enough to worry about. Here are a couple of pics.

I bought a new chain and plastic shift fork pads. Reassembled the transfer case, noise is now gone, and it's going back into the Jeep tomorrow. Total price $100.23, plus sealant and fluid.
