I've got a mat like thing (not exactly technical jargon, but I'll be damned if I know what it's called) under my XJ covering the engine; how important is this? Can I remove it? Right now it's hanging down a little and I've either got to remove it re-attach it.

I yanked mine off W/O any detrimental effects. Some here will argue that it's important, but I've yet to find out why (except for the fact that it helps keep the engine compartment a little cleaner).

If you do alot of puddle jumpin' you'll prolly wanna keep it under there. At least as to where it covers the alternator. Alt's don't like eatin mud a whole lot.

Yea, yank it off and give it to me. I've never had one, the fan slings mud all over the place. If you have an open filter this is a problem. I had to build a shield for mine. I do kinda wish I had the splash guard, sometimes. It makes it a bitch to work on though, that is a fact.

BTW, my jeep eats alternators, probably due to mud and grit getting in them. I'm on my third one now.

I've been planning to make several mini splash guards, so as to protect stuff, and also allow work from below(which is important). However this will take a lot of trial and error. I'll post pics if I ever get around to making some. Has anyone else tried this?

Just get a front skid and you'll be fine. And you'll have more protection for your steering components to boot. BTW, shouldn't this be in the Mod Tech section?? Peace

Ooops!

You're right, it should be in the mod techs section, but I goofed when I posted it.
