U-bolt Retainers for U-Joints

When I broke my straps I just marked where the yoke was at and just put it back on to the mark.

I was searching on this and found this thread http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=926955 and it looks like a u bolt kit from a 71 cj5 will work with a drilled yoke.

Also from that thread a dana 30 can be converted using this yoke:

Not quite that simple. You'll have to pull the whole carrier to be able to pull the pinion to swap the crush sleeve. When you go to put everything back together you'll have to setup the gears again.

Correct way to do it, but there are other ways as well. Just have to have some diff experience.

yea i guess ill just leave it for now. Swap the strap bolts for some grade 5 ones and keep spare u-joints some extra bolts and deal with it if i brake it. I just had seen the U-bolt strap mod and was like hey that sounds sweet. But i wanted to see how many ppl did this. I didnt know there was a crush sleeve so that screwed me. I dont want to just unhook the DS and drill into the yoke while its bolted down. I want a drill press. Then Id have to grind the rear of it for the nut to sit on. IDK just to much. If i sheer a bolt then ill drill it, untill the i hope i dont.

You know now that I read the 71 Cj ubolt thread. Im gonna look and see if i have room for the bolts. I have a a 96 with the 29-spline heck you never know what weird stuff there is. I really dont wanna grind room for the bolt so i think the grade 5 bolt idea will be ok. Hopefully i can ez out it since its not grade 8

As the 4 wheel parts link shows, the u-bolt yokes are the same for a 30, 35 and 44. Go to the junkyard and pull a u-bolt yoke off an old scout, jeep waggy/pickup, an older ford with a 44 front and some chevys 44 fronts came with u-bolt yokes as well. In so cal they are $10 at the junkyard.

I havent actually looked. Ill look tomorrow. If it is flat Im gonna replace the bolts with grade 5 and buy some CJ ubolts. that way if it sheer i can ex out it and worse come to worst drill it out to get home and keep the cj ubolts on hand

I lookd at my yoke. Its flat on the back. I think a nut can sit there.i got pics but im on my phone. They r crappy but u can see the flat area post it lata.

I just did this about a month ago. I picked up brand new spicer u-bolt yokes, crown u-bolts, and new pinion seals. Front cost $50 rear cost $55. Took less than an hour to do.

Ok Just finished this up, it went ok...

I picked up the recomemded ones off a 71 cj5, they didnt work for crap, I had to bend them open then beat them down just to get the nut to start then the nut striped out...

Luckley I also picked up a set from the "help" section. They are a courser thread and fit much much better, Im happy with them. I did have to pry them open a bit and it only took a light tap to get them to seat.

I am doing this mod this week out of necessity. I was driving to work this AM when the ujoint strap let go on my 8.25.

I was under hard acceleration, and probably drove 50 yds, it let go, and then I coasted to a stop. Anyone aware of any undue effects to my transfer case bearings/seals from having the driveshaft bang around for a few dozen feet?

I had that happen blazing up a sand dune years ago. The driveshaft flopped around and cracked the transfer case output housing. That is when I did an SYE.

Fortunately I was only doing about 25mph when it let go, up a hill, so I was able to coast to a stop easily. I guess I'll see when I get home tonight and find a large puddle of fluid under the jeep.

I've got the 44 and 30 in mine. I used a yoke from a scout 44 in the rear and a yoke from a CJ 30 in the front. They use the same 1310 joints, the seals are the same, and alreadyuse the U bolts, so its a bolt in swap. A 35 is the same spline as a 44 but the seal diameter is different. As for the 8.25 i dont know about so i cant help ya there, just thought that might be of some use.
