turn signal not cancelling

Hi,
An update on this because i know there were a couple of different opinions on how this should be fixed.

If you recall this was an inconsistant problem of not self cancelling from both sides. Sometimes it cancelled, sometimes it didnt, On BOTH SIDES.

Today i centered the steering by undoing the 2 nuts and adjusting the adjustment sleeve. My steering wheel was roughly 20 to 30 degrees off center going by the top of the airbag area. Now its flat level with the dash going in a straight line.

Took it out on a LONG test drive with LOTS of turning to make sure of the result.

Well now my turn signal does indeed self cancel when turning left, 100 percent of the time.
This was NOT the case yesterday or prior to me centering the steering wheel.

However, it now self cancels zero percent when turning right!!!

Before i centered the steering wheel, it would self cancel when turning right all be it intermittently. (And no, i wasnt confused, it was an intermittent problem on both sides of not self cancelling).

Now i have a problem of not self cancelling when turning right only (which i knew others have had and have fixed by replacing the turn signal unit.)

So would it be fare to say that you were both right??

Ultimatley i need to replace my turn signal unit!

BUT i can now see that not having a centered steering wheel does indeed have an effect on self cancelling the turn signal in some capacity.
Maybe i had both problems at the same time as its been like it for ages!!!

Many thanks for all your help everyone, i shall now order a new turn signal unit. If there are any problems with that ill get back to you!!!

Hi,
when i took this apart i could see that the turn signal lever had a split in it at the join. The previous owner had obviously done some work on this as one of the connectors was not all the way in. Ive just fitted a new unit, seated it and now works fine. But a 5 minute job this has not been!!!
It was a very simple replacement but now i cant get the top cowling back on the steering wheel. Ive put the steering wheel as LOW as it will go but no joy. Ive been fiddling with it for 3/4 of an hour. To get it out i can recall being a bit forcefull with it, but it was easier to manovoure and keep an eye on the wiring as it was coming out. Is there a trick to this??

Now i have to leave for work so ive ran out of time.
I came to the conclusion that it will be quicker to pull the front part of the dash but the headlight switch (just the puller part) needs to come out as the knob is just a tiny bit too big to slip over the cover.
Ive done a VERY quick search on this and it says that there is a button on the bottom of the switch but ive had a look and there is no button on my button!! unless this button is on the bottom of the headlight unit switch itself and the knee panel needs to come out?? Does the knob need to be twisted at all to get it out??

My plan is to leave some tools in my car and do it on a break at work. as i dont want to leave my car with the ignition wiring exposed for too long!! Ill check for any updates on my phone whilst at work.
many thanks

OK, never done this, just from FSM for 2000. Need to remove knee blocker. Little button to release knob is on the "inboard" side of switch. (I wonder if yours would be outboard, because to us, inboard would be the right (vs. left) side.) Switch needs to be in the on position, so you kind of need to disconnect battery. Also, center bezel (around radio) needs to be removed in order to remove the cluster bezel.

Yes, its a 5 minute or so job to take it all apart. [\QUOTE]

Sorry, I forgot to mention its a pain to put the top back together, but not impossible. In my defense, I did say 5 minutes to take it all apart.

It is possible to put it back in without removing the upper dash, I've done it. You just need to do some manuevering, and use a bit of force. As far as the dash going over the light button, I know its tight, but I seem to remember I managed to get it over the switch, without pressing that little button. Even just pulling the switch into the on possition could give you a little more room to manuever the dash out of the way without removing it.

its ok its my own fault. I should have known it would take me longer than an hour. I see what your saying about slipping the panel over the switch as its sooo close but didnt want to force it. Also i tried the switch in the on position to get that extra inch to slip the cowl on but again didnt want to force it to much. Just stepped into the unknown by removing the knee panel, hood release bracket, steel plate, center panel but then it got dark so gave up and didnt want to force that sucker out in case i lost lights for the way home. Ive put it back together and will try with a little more force at guiding it in tomorrow. At least i know now that it wont simply guide in. I just hope my car will be there still when i go to drive home!

yeah i done this today. I didnt force it exactly but certainly didnt flap around with it. I didnt have to take off any panels either.

The main problem was where the top and bottom shroud meet at the rear. Theres 3 screws on the shroud to take it off, two on the front on either side (easy), and one at the rear in the middle. and its this plastic piece of the top shroud that sticks down that holds that screw that caused me the problem. It just gets in the way and kinda wedged inbetween the speedo part of the dash and the top of the steering without wanting to go back or down any further.
Basically i dropped the steering as low as it would go and held it there if it moved back up even slightly. (mine moves back up a tiny bit when you release the adjuster, but its a tiny bit of unhelpfullness!!) I started to guide/gentle encouragement it in whilst keeping an eye on that plastic piece. I shoved some wiring out of the way, and that gave me an extra bit to drop down. It became easier then. Then i bent part of the shroud that fits around the steering wheel adjuster and then moving it back and then over the hazard light switch. Its hard because its all fingers and thumbs and easy to run out of hands!! But when i got more physical with it today it took me no more than 10 minutes to put it all back together. like i said this was done without having to remove any panels other than the top and bottom steering shroud. And thankfully no removal of the airbag!!!
many thanks for the advice on this one and another fix.
