turn signal not cancelling

Hi,
Ive done a search on this but havent found a problem to be the same as mine.
Its a 97 facelift model with airbag but i havent got cruise control on my stalk.
My problem is INTERMITTENT on BOTH sides. Sometimes it cancels and sometimes it dont. which isnt something that i came across looking at other posts. Furthermore sometimes theres a positve clunk as i move the stalk as it should, sometimes its a bit lame. either way it makes its own mind up wether to self cancel.

Ive read about self cancelling cams, broken springs, quick and easy fixes or pita fixes requiring special tools and having to rip everything apart.

Im still waiting on ebay to get me an fsm for my year as they are not easy to get here, so i havent got a clue how to get into it yet.
Can anyone shed any light??

Removing the steering wheel to get to the turn signal is a little complicated.

1) remove horn button. Remove the wheel nut, and use a puller to loosen the wheel.

2) Install a lockplate remover to depress the spring, remove the clip and then disassemble from there.

Once there you can get to the turn signal assembly. It's made of a white nylon like substance that can be less durable than we'd like. Usually its held with 2 or 3 screws that may be loose, or the tabs broken off. To get an intermittent problem like described, it sounds like something is loose or wandering around.

A Haynes or Chilton does describe the technique, but the tools are mandatory, and there are no decent substitutes. Fortunately, most modern cars require them and they are available.
 
I'am assuming your steering wheel is centered???? If it's not centered that will make the turns not cancel correctly..

Yeah pulling a steering wheel can be job.

With an air bag it is not really worth the trouble, IMO. Since I have had my current 89, the switch doesnt click back.. I just live with it.
 
yeah my steering wheel is NOT centred!! Its probably an inch, maybe inch and a half too much to the right, but it hasnt really bothered me, I know theres a post on putting that right, i just havent got round to fixing it (and didnt realise it could be connected.) That will be my first step as it needs doing anyway. But could that explain why it doesnt intermittently cancel in both directions??

If that is not the answer, is it not possible to just get a new complete turn signal/hazard light switch and replace it by removing the column cowling without having to take the steering wheel off??

This is the problem that i found when searching on this. So many similar problems but with completley different solutions. I found a similar problem with a guy who did have the facelift model who just replaced the unit but he had slightly different issues in as much as his was always playing up and not self cancelling.
Is it a case of unplugging the old unit and plugging the new unit in? If i recall i think his fix was done in about 5 minutes, Does this sound about right??

Yes, its a 5 minute or so job to take it all apart. I can 100% confirm you don't have to pull the steering wheel on a '97+, I've done it many times.

When I first took mine out, there is a little mechanism that you have to seat correctly, otherwise it won't cancel out the blinker when you turn. I didn't do this the first time, and it wouldn't cancel out when I used the left blinker. I can't be more specific than mechanism because its been a while, and I can't remember exactly what was there. I think its just 2 arms that need to be placed correctly. You'll see everything once you get it apart.
 
The problem is your steering wheel needs centered.. It's easy to center.

Make sure the front wheels are pointing straight. Unlock the steering wheel but don't touch it.

At the pitam arm steering linkage Loosen the two bolts on the coupler while someone watches the steering wheel turn the coupler in the correct direction intill the steering wheel is centered. It's that easy..

it would still cancel if the steering was off center. when the steering wheel gets to a certain position, it cancells. the switch doesnt know its off center. there is a little white contact that sticks out of the switch that goes bad.
 
IMHO, Turn signal would still cancel if wheel was not centered, as long as you made more than a 90 degree turn. But centering is very easy. Spray the nuts with your favorite brand of penetrating oil now. On the Jeep , it's easy, one link controls toe in, the other controls steering wheel position. On most cars, you have to go back and forth between the two sides trying to get toe in and wheel center.
 
Okay, just try it before ya go and buy parts ,it will fix the problem. I just went through this same situation on a steering wheel colum swap...

ok, ill hopefully tie down what will fix this and post the result. Ill start by centering the steering. I can confirm though that ensuring the steering goes back to center (or past it for that matter) does not cancel it when it misbehaves. I took it through an empty car park with plenty of space and done it several times. When it played up it would not self cancel no matter how much i turned the steering. But we will see, ill update when im done. Thanks for input everyone
 
if its not cancelling in either direction, the switch is bad. there are 2 bumps on the steering wheel that contact the switch to cancel it. so if your steering was off center, eventually it would contact the switch and cancel.
 
Yah I have the same problem. Have a new switch just haven't got around to installing it yet. Took off the covers removed the black piece holding the rubber grommet on then got stuck and couldn't figure out the next step.

Yah mine would not self cancel at all. My steering wheel was centered though. One other thing that was wrong with mine is when I turned my hazard switch on sometimes only one light would blink. Anyways when I started taking it apart I didn't have the switch on me so I didn't realize it was all "one piece". Basically all you do is take the shroud off and then undo the metal plate holding the grommet on then just unplug the harness and slide it out. I started taking apart the switch the first time.
