Transmission/TorqConverter Problems

The AW4 will take dextron II and up...so, its not a fluid problem.

the code 45 is a fault in the trans temp sensor and is what is causing the od and lack of converter lock up....the TCU sees the fault and disables the tcc and od

code 45:
no temp rise after start or,
signal voltage high or,
signal voltage low.

this means: sensor is bad, unplugged, shorted to batt + or shorted to ground.

If this started after the dealer changed the fluid, it is quite possible that the wiring harness inside was pinched during service.

Thats contrary to what everyone else is saying and to what TSB 21-004-04 apparently says. Anyone have the text of that bulletin or no where to get it?

EDIT: After thinking about it I guess it depends on what you mean. Dexron II and up meaning Dexron III? or do you mean Dexron II, Dexron III, ATF +3, ATF +4? Because they are not the same.

There is a reason that they put Dexron III/Mercron on the manual. Can you use other stuff? Sure, but not for the best performance, that tranny was made to use just that stuff. If they put in something completely different then they have to replace it, plain and simple. Call them up and act stupid and tell them you want to bring in your Jeep to get the tranny flushed and filled, do you guys have Dexron III/Mercron? If they say no, then ask what they would put in it and write that down and the guys name.

If you take the Jeep back and they won't do it, ask to speak with the manager and simply say, "here's the deal, you didn't put the right fluid in my tranny and now it's acting bad. I need you to put the right fluid in my Jeep or I will go to your boss." Go as high as you have to, worst case I'll show you how to take them to small claims court, simple and easy way to get them moving without even going to court. Make sure they understand that everything was running great until you brought it in for service. Because they would have notice codes coming up and would have easily brought it to your attention so they could "fix it for you" since they are so nice.

Either way, I'd reverse engineer this thing, meaning take away all the problems that it could be, ie fluid, fuses, TCM, wires, etc until you find the problem.

New Dexrom III/Mercon on the left. 3 week old Fluid (whatever it is) on the right. Something is definately wrong.

I took the jeep into the dealer today and after grilling the guy behind teh counter for awhile, who didn't know anything, I finally talked to one of the guys that actually works on the vehicles. He knew right off the bat not to put ATF +4 in the Aisin-Warner transmissions and confirmed that i was atleast charged for Dexron III. So I'm feeeling better about that. I'm not feeling better about the transmission however. Their going to diagnose it and we'll see what they say.

Reading this thread, I might have something to add-

THe code 66 sounds familiar to me.

There are 3 solenoids in the AW4 transmission.
1 is for 1-2 gears
2 is for 3-4 gear
3 is for lockup.

I had the Check engine light come on once and if I remember correctly it was the #3 solenoid.

I got the #3 solenoid replaced and all was well again.

Hope this helps-

Dealer said it was a solenoid. Most likely the #3 one you mention. Shuold be back on the road in time for my trip. Thatnks to everyone for your suggestions.
