transfer case stuck in 4hi

While driving back from Knox this weekend, i put the jeep in 4high to get over some ice snowy roads up in NC, go to disengage the xfercase and it wouldnt go in to 2wd. So i drove it home as is. i kept wiggling it back and forth and about 40 miles from destination the part time light disappears. I figured it was out of 4h, but when i got around the corner of the street, it started bucking like it was engaged..
Its got a spartan locker up front and the crappy 242..
I might have hosed my xfercase driving that many miles in 4h.

Would the cold weather cause the xfercase to not disengage?

Check the linkage first, before you do anything. Is it making any noise?

hop under it and check the linkage, it sounds like it may be out adjustment youll see the tab on the side of the case, once you figure out which way it needs to go you can manually put it in 2hi to see if the adjustment is out of whack.... if thats not it then its probably an internal shift fork issue

How's your tire pressure? I've had issues with mine going in and out of 4hi if my pressure is significantly off in 1 or 2 tires.

I wouldn't worry about the tcase being hosed. As long as you kept it under 55-60mph and took it easy on the turns, you should be fine.

I drove 200 miles on the highway two weeks ago locked in 4hi running on the front drive shaft only because my rear took a crap on me, and my 242 seems just fine.

its good to have 2 jeeps.. leave one broke at the house and drive the other one to work.
When i get my house with the garage this will be sooooooo much more easier to work on.

Maybe its operator error? When you drove my Grand you couldn't get the 242 to shift properly and nobody else that has driven it has had that issue, myself included. :dunno:

Honestly, the t-case is most likely ok. The driveshaft spins all the time anyway, and you were going in a straight line for the most part on the highway, so there would have been very little binding. Im gonna go with the crowd on this one and say its the linkage.

always gotta say something negative towards me. i couldnt get your zj to shift properly.. had nothing to do with the xfercase.. I d mash the accellerator and it would sit there like it was in 2nd gear.. I dont see how you can mix up transmission with a transfercase. some mechanic you are!

Whatever dude, I try to help you by agreeing and saying to check the linkage and you blast me, but I shouldve known. You are the all glorious ass hole. I hope the t-case falls out while you're driving down the road.

And by the way, you DID have trouble shifting the case, I thought you were going to rip the damn shifter off trying to get it into 4 low. The trans was messed up and wouldn't go into first, yes, but that has nothing to do with you grinding the dang t-case and being to dumb to realize you needed to put it into neutral before shifting it. And one other thing, some mechanic I am, yeah, Im pretty damn good to be honest. I fixed the trans yesterday so that I can finally get rid of it. Shifts great now and pulls like mad! However, it wouldn't matter if I was the best in the world, I could never figure out how to help an ignorant bastard like yourself.

Is this my old one? That thing has always had a quirk about 4 HI. Even after replacing the t-case. So it could be the linkage needs adjustment. I stopped using it in 4 HI. Best bet is to stop, then get rolling about 5-7 mph then pop trans into N and try the t-case. Not sure if you have tried that method or not.
