Transfer case ?'s

We just got a 97 XJ Sport for my wife and she is really excited to start moding it out.
We were up in the hills the other day and it got pretty muddy. So I put it into 4wd. I have the 231 in my wrangler and the XJ has the 242. I'm confused what each 4wd (part time, full time) does and which one is best for what terrain and conditions?
Also, the light comes on for part time, but one did not come on for full time, does full time 4wd have a light? If so what could be the problem?

Full time can be used full time even on pavement, part time should only be used in situations where slippage can occour. In part time it is basically the same as the 231 in your jeep.

Go to jeep.com and look at the videos explaining how their 4x4 sytems work. If you have part time and full time it would be the selec-trac system. But to save ya the trouble off road use part time.
