california transmission in hawthorne is good, also inglewood transmission in fullerton builds a lot of race transmissions but they're in OC. they really know their shit though.
these transmissions are pretty stout, but occasionally do need some attention. many times a simple fix that you can do yourself. you may want to post the problem you are having with it. might just save yourself a bunch of dough.
Agreed... 130K is a very premature death for an AW4... (knock on wood) I'm pushing 240K on my current rig, as are many others on here... I've owned probably 10 AW4 XJs over the years, for anywhere from weeks to years, and most have had closer to 200K than 100K. I've heard rumors of the high 300K's from some folks.
The problem i am having is in drive, when starting from a stop it acts like it has no power and if i shift into low has more power and moves so then i shift back to drive and it runs fine until i stop again.
sounds like the trans is not down shifting. you are basically going from a stop in 2nd or 3rd gear. most likely 3rd. i actually had the same problem on my 89. after testing the trans controller and its connections i found that a couple of the solenoids did not test to spec. you can use a multi meter and test the solenoids before removing them. i went to the junk yard, pulled the pan of a lower mileage XJ, and tested the solenoids. all were good so i took them out, went home and swapped them over. all fixed. do a search on the forum and you will find very informative threads on how to test and repair. in a nut shell? my guess is is bad solenoid(s) or connection.
Mines acted up today on a lot of highway driven... Didn't wanna downshift into 1st... And wouldn't shift outta third gear until I let the jeep sit for bout 15 good mins... Then shifted like new? Fluid and filter is on my list... Otherwise I luv my xj so far 226000 miles engine is sound!!!!
