Tranny issue?

I just searched for him -- check out these links, Jonathan... could be a cheap easy fix.

Thanks for the searching brother. Ive gotten underneath and found both sensors and wiggled the wires like a few of the posts have said. I just read in the posts on jeepforum that they were all getting CEL codes, which I am not... Even when the problem really acts up and is jerking up a hill violently. I may just go ahead and drop the 80 bux for the input and output sensors and see what happens. Couldnt hurt. Im just worried Im going to end up burning up the profit I made off the TJ on trying to fix the WJ. My intention on buying the WJ was to have a comfortable, safe, reliable vehicle for us... and do a few mods to make it more capable on trails.

But the sensor idea is definately a possibility which I am going to pursue... and I truly appreciate everyones help in tracking down this gremlin.

=)

Gorsh! If it were an XJ, I'd be looking at the TPS.

Still no CEL's, even when the jerkyness get violent. So I figured maybe the CEL light bulb was blown so ran the codes anyway on a scanner and nothing. I'm just so clueless because I figure a code would have popped up somewhere. I'm so clueless!!!!! Ahh!

Take it in, see what the shop says?

Thats where I'd be at.

I took it in on Thursday and had a mechanic drive it. He was out for 40 mins with the Jeep and said he couldn't re-create the problem... He didn't charge me. Maybe I'll drive it this time so I can make the shutter happen, since ive narrowed it down to a certain speed/rpm.

Turns out that the 4.7L's have a TPS. Getting deep into it tomorrow and cleaning the crap out of the throttle body, changing oil again, checking all hoses... Just want to get this issue resolved so I can go ahead and order a lift kit for this thing and get it started. Ive started to really like the big luxury soccer mom jeep!

One other thing, Since the problem started happening, ive gone from 17-20 mpg to 13 mpg as shown on my overhead console... Could this mean anything?

yella's humor aside, it does likely mean something, although it could mean you've been putting your foot in it trying to diagnose what the issue is... what led you to suspect the tps? It should be at a specific rpm, not a specific speed, if its a throttle issue. Did you replace the tranny sensors yet? not everyone with sensor issues throws a code...

I guess i just keep putting off the sensors on the tranny until I get a code/CEL. I just dont want to drop my cash into replacing perfectly good parts. Is there anyway to test a sensor like the input and output speed sensors?

I just wish this thing would throw a code already! The other day i get into that sweet spot where it jerks like crazy and kept it there hoping I would throw a code..... and........ Nothing. Ive learned to tolerate it now and know how to avoid it from happening now by going really easy on the gas when approaching hills. If you're easy on the gas, the problem doesnt show up. Its only when youre giving it gas to get up a hill, but just a little gas.... because if you step on the pedal, it drops gears and hauls ass. Ive also noticed it being a bit choppy during take offs to... like taking off from a light, it seems like its starving for air and is running a bit rough which is why now I believe its an engine/sensor issue and not a tranny/tcase issue anymore.

People don't think about cruising along at 12.8% throttle. They think in terms of MPH, or, after they make that right turn on whatever street.

A TPS is easy enough to rule out without throwing money at the thing. Although, you'd think a certified mechanic would find that sweet spot in 40 minutes of driving.

Here's where I'm at...

Got the transmission speed sensors on order and should be here tomorrow.
Replaced TPS (was 31 bux, worth a shot)
Cleaned idle air control valve, was dirty as hell.
Cleaned throttle body

Jeep runs better, actually purrs like a kitten now, but shuttering is still present.

So, since the shutter comes from the rear, I decided to check out the Dana 44a fluid levels. Maybe the gears are all chewed up and it's slipping? Didn't get to change the fluid but got the fill cap off and stuck my pinky in and couldn't get it down deep enough to feel any fluid, which is bad. Could an axle slip that much causing a jerking when going up gradual inclines?

I think your speed specific symptoms make the cat an unlikely suspect.

Means your geting crappy mpg :>{)))

I'll update tomorrow after I get these new tranny speed sensors in. But could a D44a slip more than often? I do have a bit of a humming coming from the rear, especially when slowing down.

if you can't feel the fluid with your finger, I would say at a minimum to add some real soon, and preferably to change the fluid. You will need a mopar-only friction modifier for the vari-lok limited slip (see the pattern of Chrysler stealing your money for special lubricants...?)
