since i am a lazy tard (& dead tired after spending 26 hours working on the red pig over the weekend) can someone tell me what flavor tranny fluid to drown my '92 auto in? mercon, dexcon, type f, +4, wtf is the difference?

I use Amsoil Full syn Universal ATF in my AW4/np231, and have no issues. I have also used ATF+4 with no ill effects.
DexIII is what most use. ATF+4 is newer/synthetic.

Yea what they sayed!!

i used the dec/merc III usually, i know like the ford type F stuff is NO GO.

some say the ATF+4 is bad in the AW4 but ive yet to see anyone have first hand experience of a problem

Years ago there was much angst and discussion on the tech threads about what to use in post 1998-99 XJs. Apparently the owners manual in the glove box stated ATF+4 and the service manuals stated Dexron III. and IIRC a TSB came out from Chrysler that stated the owners manuals were incorrect and use Dexron III.

I have used DEX-III in all my XJs including the 2000 without problems.

Preeeeeeecisely. I would use DEX-III as well, but if I needed to fill my tranny with all new fluid and only had ATF+4 in a pinch I wouldnt have any hesitation doing so

Dex-III is correct, and if you really want to go "Over-Kill", pull the drain plug on the tranny each time you change engine oil. I want my XJ to last another 20 years, so i change the oil every 3000, and always drain out 4 quarts of used Dex-III and add 4 new quarts. The tranny fluid just keeps looking better and better, and the stock tranny has 224,500 miles on it now. Real Dex-II and Dex-III is getting hard to find, and I am gonna stock up on a few extra cases this month. I would much rather change 4 quarts of ATF every 60 days than change the AW4!!!
