Tranny cooler??

Sure it does(unless its inter-cooled)!

"The internal and external cooling fins in these Derale new Heat Sink transmission coolers provide maximum cooling efficiency without relying on direct airflow. Their compact diameter means they can be mounted in a variety of locations, such as on the frame rail next to the transmission, directly under the radiator, under the floorboards, etc."

What happens if you run a trans. too cool for too long?
I'm not sure the particulars why but I believe it's along the same line as running your engine too cool. Oils don't get to proper temperature and aren't as viscous and don't perform like they should causing wear on parts not being lubed as well.

when shopping for a tranny cooler what would a guy need to know to look for to know if it would work?? Line sizes and what?? would it still go threw the rad or no??

On the instructions on my kit and advice from fellow jeepers was to run it:
tranny out- cooler in- cooler out- radiator in- radiator out- tranny in

This makes sure that if your driving in cold conditions that the radiator will make sure it leaves at proper minimum temp in case your cooler is working too well. As far as what to ask for, I just went to the CAP dude and asked if they had a tranny cooler kit for a 90xj. He looked it up and had a kit there for me. Like I said before it couldn't have cost more then $20. Came with cooler, hoses, ties to attached it to a radiator and clamps.

who is the CAP dude? and how do I get ahold of him!! for that price I could do it now lol

Consumer Auto Parts. I had a leaky tranny line anyway so I figured why not do the cooler while fixing the leak. I'll try to snap some pics of it on there today and I'll post em up.

jeepin.com has a good writeup on installing a tranny cooler. i pretty much copied his exact writeup, parts and all. worked fine. he uses a plate cooler from B&M.

Sounds like a manufacturers sales gimmic!

I have one installed that came from a 1996 Chevrolet 2wd with the 700r4. I towed a trailer 1400 miles including over mountain passes (Raton, NM, LaVita, and Wolf Creek Pass) and never overheated the tranny. The cooler was $10 at the local pick and pull yard.

No technical expertise on the matter, and I don't know about long-term wear problems, but has anybody ever seen a transmission that wouldn't work at initial start-up/not shift into gear/slip/exhibit strange behavior until it was "warmed up"? I haven't. They seem to work fine when cold.

As far as thickening oil, ATF can't be much more then around 5-W to start with. At room temperature it's "thinner" then cooking oil.

really?? I would think if it was to cool the oil would become to thick and not lubricate properly. not true??
Like tbburg said the viscosity of tranny fluid is very low compared to engine oil. It will flow just fine down to a very low temp. We're talking like 30 below. There are no issues with a tranny operating at the kind of temps we see in the continental US.

So theoretically, you could cool the trans down a lot to help preserve it's life span without worrying about running it too cool.

Something like Aux trans cooler, plus modifications to the pan.
