I was just curious, one of my buddies i go wheeling with has an 87 toy. truck. and its caburated. i was under the impression that some 85's and all 86up had fuel injection? when did fuel injection become standard? not a real big deal, just wondering if anyone knew what toyota did.

87 is pretty late for a carb, but not unheard of. My wife's 87 Colt had a carb, and I know the Colt Vista changed from carb to FI halfway through the 87 year. I think the Subaru Justy was carbed as late as 1990 or so, and in 1988 in Hawaii I rented an 88 or 89 Chevy Sprint (awful little piece of s***) that was conspicuously carbureted - i.e. it didn't run worth squat. I don't think you'll see many carbs after 87, but there were a few.

well, im not talking about cars in general, after all even FSJ's were carb'd up to 92 or so, i beleieve. ive just always heard that 85 and a half was the ebst year for toys, cause you can fine them with the striaght axle and fuel injection, and all 86's were injected. obviously not, because i know of one 87 thats carb'd. i was just wondering if its something that snuck in, or only certain packages were carbed, or what.

I'm guessing that certain packages were carbed. Now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure the Tercels I rented in Hawaii in fall of 88 were carbed as well.

that is very common, carbureted toys are common all the way through 88, am not sure on the cut off year, probably in 89 when they switched body style.

Hey I actually know a little about this subject since I was a strictly Toyota guy untill I bought my 95 XJ. The 1985 was the most desirable year for the Hilux/4Runner because you could get the straight axle and fuel injection (if so equipped.) 1986 was the first year for IFS. Fuel injection was an extra cost option 1985 through 1989 and I believe in 1990 it was standard on all Toyota pickups from that point forward. My 1987 and 1989 pickups were carburated and my 1985 4Runner was fuel injected. Toyota carbs are probably the weak link in reliability on the 20R and 22R motors. I never had any issues with the fuel injection system on the 1985 despite it had 300,000 on the clock and had lived a pretty rough life. In case y'all are wondering I have been able to get through a few places in my stock Cherokee that my lifted 4Runner on 33's couldn't (articulation is a good thing!) Don't get me wrong Toyota makes an excellent product, but the Cherokee has been one of the best buying decisions that I have made.
