Ok guys, i need your expert info finding skills here. About 6 months ago a friend of mine who owns a towing company just north of Bowling Green KY got a call from the state police wanting him to tow an abandoned vehicle from the side of the interstate. Hes now had this '97 ZJ Limited sitting behind his shop for awhile and wants to get rid of it. I looked it over this afternoon and it looks like the only thing wrong with it is a destroyed pass. side hub/unit bearing. As far as we know, the owners have never reported it stolen but have also never tried to claim it. Does anyone know if a vehicle left for so long becomes property of the towing company/ how to go about getting a title for it?
Thanks, Wes

If he owns a towing company he should be very familler with the laws concerning him taking legal ownership of the vehicle. In Illinois they are extensive and complicated, I am sure it is the same in KY.

Laws vary state to state, but he can probably apply for a mechanics lien on it. The police depart. can give him advice on how to do this. It's probably going to involve sending a registered letter to the current owner stating that it is going to be sold to pay his towing/storage bill on a date that will be publicly announced (add in paper). If he does not respond, with proof that you've taken these steps, the state should issue a new title. But like I said double check, because this varies between states
