Tough Looking XJ on front cover of FourWheelParts Rag

Good lil talk here about this trip/the xxxpedition Jeep. I am the guy with the 87 Brown XJ "Curtis" & have to say if you meet this guy & his wife you will see they are HARD CORE! The article was the best I have seen ever done about wheeling in AK & I hope to see more storys from them in many more mags. Good folks to run with! Any of you wanting to make the drive up to see what IS the best off-roading in the U.S. post up & we will make your stay full of fun & adventure!

It's not easy to make an XJ fugly but he seems to have succeeded. However he gets mega points for the travel/wheeling that he does. Given the choice between a polished rig at the mall vs a set up ugly duckling on the trail, I'd go with the trail rig hands down. TC

Would you drive from Los Angeles to Alaska and back with only 1 spare of everything?

It amazes me how ignorant some of you are... hasta

Why would you have to carry 1 spare of everything from Los Angeles to Alaska? It's paved most of the way, so what does that have to do with anything?

By your logic, would you also carry a spare engine "just in case" you might need it? Hey, how about a spare transfer case and tranny "just to make extra sure you're covered". Thought so....

My whole point to the 2 spare tire thing is that a plug repair kit and/or a spare inner tube or two could free up a lot precious space that spare on the roof takes. Plus it frees up a butt-load of weight thrown on the roof rack. So where do you draw the line? I draw it at carrying one spare, maybe you do otherwise.

Personally, if I were traveling in Alaskan backcounty, I'd be more apt to carry more fuel than another spare. Remember, fueling stations are more scarce in Alaska than they are in downtown LA.....

Ditto.
But, I'll stick with my polished rig on the trail.

hey oddball, i think your rig is much more appropriate, except for those who live and sleep in theirs.

We have a lot of roads & trails here that can take a sunny good weather day turn into a "OH my god" WE have not seen another rig pass this spot on over 6 hours. Keep in mind he has his rig set up to be able to keep things running without the need to call a tow truck. I haul about 400lbs of gear/parts with me at all times & thats not including the tools. I don't care for my rig to be Purdy, Just functional & get me in & out with little trouble & in comfort.
