Touchy Subject...

i pulled mine in my 96 and works fine. i just bought a bung and welded it into the straight pipe.

yes i know the welds suck, it was with flux core and it works...

i wish i hadnt removed the cat. but i am not going to spend the money to replace it, it was clogged and the exhaust sounds really nice with it removed.

I thought my cat was clogging up back in spring on a return trip from my camping vacation towing my popup. so I cut it off and straight piped it temporarily
I have a 99 with a post cat O2 and after about 100 miles of driving without the cat the check engine light came on and each time I reset it it since like clockwork at 100 miles it would come back on
my mpg went up a whopping 1 mpg on highway trips but around town has gone down with no cat on there
I have noticed a drop in bottom end torque especially when towing my camper. I did notice a little better tone from the exhaust but its a stock muffler so its still QUIET
I have a brand new magnaflow cat and dynomax cat-back sittin in my room waitin to be installed I just want to get a new O2 sensor first but dont have the cash to do so yet but trust me as soon as I can get it replaced that new setup will be goin back on
I want my torque back

so cliffsnotes for above
if its clogging up/clogged you can remove it but you will get a check engine light
the SOUND WILL CHANGE some like it some dont
you MIGHT gain some mpg and power up top especially if its clogged
but if you like the feel of your jeep and the power it has down low dont do it

5 years ago I woulda said do it in a heartbeat
cuz I did it on my S10 and loved it but I drove that thing like a race car

they make eliminator boxes that plug into the harness instead of the O2 sensor.now if they make one that will work on the Xj i don't know.

they do and that is what I use and get no codes on a 98XJ. The one I bought isn't offered anymore though. sorry

I have a O2 sensor simulator on my S10 I got it from caspers electronics
BUT caspers had an interesting run in with the feds here very recently and was essentially issued a CEASE AND DESIST order and stopped making the O2 sims immediately. they then went to court over it and from what I understand they didnt fare to well

the O2 sims only last for a couple years anyway before they start to fail
now on my S10 anytime I drive in heavy rain or alot of road spray or on muddy roads I get a check engine light because anmy time the sensor gets wet it throws a code
but after a couple days of dry weather it goes away
