too much jeep stuff in college appartment

5th gear was being stubborn and wouldn't press off of the shaft with the gear puller, i don't have a torch, and the reverse pinion was already pretty marred.

pretty good reason to buy a torch! a MAPP gas torch is maybe like 25 bucks or something, and is well worth it

thanks. i wouldn't have to do a rebuild if i refilled my tranny after i did my SYE last thanksgiving (2008). I completely forgot and then drove 120 miles. woops. then wheeled a bunch of times with 30 wt motor oil in it... it still shifts just fine but the gears are loud.
 
just got back in from doing jeep-things... i rearranged the crap that i'm storing in my small barn, took my roof rack off my jeep (cuz it wouldn't fit otherwise), put the jeep in the barn, lubed my hood latch mechanism because my hood wouldn't stay shut, took the jeep for a quick drive (first time in a few weeks... i miss it a lot), and parked it. i also started my motorcycle and let that idle for a while too. i miss that too.

Anthony - how's the rebuild going? I have always been afraid of working on transmissions, mostly as I don't fully understand them yet, and seeing you take a chop saw to one of the gears/shafts was a bit strange. Is that the spare parts one, or how do you plan to fix it? Just replace the parts you chopped up I would assume?

there were 2 tranny's... one wouldn't fully come apart, so i cut it. before i cut it i double checked that that specific shaft on the other tranny was useable. you don't cut a transmission shaft and expect to fix it... those are machined and ground all from one piece.

then i went down to work on the tranny. continuing to reassemble, i popped the old seals out of the front plate and the rear adapter housing. i have the new rear seal but never bought a front one. will have to pick one of those up soon. probably less than 10 bucks. also started reinstalling snap rings and apparently they're fit to gap. no big deal, i just broke out my calipers. thank the lord for instruction manuals, though... and i discovered that the bearing on the lower shaft is mighty crunchy. i have a feeling it's just full of dirt, but it's crunchy either way. so i either need to figure out how to clean it out or press it off and get the other one pressed on. crappy part is that i can't do it with the gear puller. i'm bringing it to work tomorrow. i'll probably do it at lunch or after hours or something...
 
so, i've gotten a little more work done. as i am reassembling i'm inspecting each and every piece and selecting the best one from either tranny... i came across this predicament: 5th gear on one tranny has a good syncro coupler. the other one has a good gear. they're not really made to be pressed apart, but i tried and it's not really moving very much... i can get a new one for about 100 bucks... more than i paid for both tranny's combined.

the teeth on the gear chipped when i tried in vain to pull it... i eventually got it off by cutting the shaft.. but also unfortunately i wasn't so careful when i cut the shaft and the side of the gear had a small contact with the cutting wheel. i think i need to continue trying to swap them.

With 3 I think you should be able to build two working trannies, one to beat the crap out of until it's worn out and another one to use after that?
 
naw. i'm not buying another one for just 5th gear... unless someone has one.
 
haven't gotten anymore work done on the tranny... too busy with holidays and i went to ireland too... (see this thread: http://naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?p=244747133#post244747133)

the other day someone at work posted 84 assorted reamers for sale on the work bulletin board for only $75. needless to say i took it upon myself to become their new owners. there are a lot of sizes, many under and oversize reamers ranging in size from 1/32 to 41/64. some are brand spankin new, some are uh... not so new. i took the liberty of snapping a few pics.

I got a few end mills for you if you want, free from the machine shop at Northeastern! Can you belive they were going to throw these away?

I dont know much about machine shop tooling but that milling device/thing/bit doesn't look like crap? Looks like something I'd be willing to throw out... :dunno:

that's from some of the other (not very bright) seniors who were doing the senior design projects at the same time as me, who used the end mills WAY too fast, and pretty much melted the aluminum to the mill. using 4 flute end mills on aluminum at north of 2000rpm = FAIL, since the chips can't eject
 
I always just picked it off and used them anyways :dunno:

again, this is why I'm EE/CE instead of ME...

kyle, i'll take whatever you can toss my way... that's a super common mistake. it's a combination of too high of a feed rate/rpm and lack of lube. it's not really a big deal to chip the aluminum off and re-use the mills. 2000rpm on aluminum isn't a big deal. unless you don't have lube. which i'm guessing there wasn't because schools are cheap. i know my school was. you really need a high pressure system like you commonly see in a CNC that makes a huge mess.

i grabbed the three junky end mills that had aluminum gunked up in there today at work. that one is a 1/2", there's a 1/4" 4 flute that's even more gunked up and a 3/16" 2 flute. i tried for a minute or two a piece to chip it off with a screwdriver but didn't bother too much since they're cheapo throwaway end mills anyways. we do have coolant, that blue stuff you usually see on CNCs (which we do use on the CNC mill and lathe), but most of the people who didn't know how to machine didn't bother using it. i also contribute it a lot to way too high of a feed rate, and then also not realizing the mill stopped knocking out chips, but a fine aluminum dust :gee:

come to the run and i'll get you the three, in exchange for my old reverse idler gear paperweight !
