to buy or build?

I wouldn't waste my time with a cold air intake. The power gains really are minimal unless combined with alot of other mods. Now if I could afford a real snorkel that would be a different story.

I read an independant study that showed that when the oil dries out they no longer filter particles. However, oiling them too much will cause oil bleed out and destroy the MAF. Supposedly the performance gains are real according to the study. Works fine for race cars mainly because they can be cleaned and re-oiled between uses, but not so practical for daily driver use IMO.

Yeah, what he said.

K&N are great for race cars, but on DD's and off road vehicles they are not supposed to be so good. The increased air flow through the filter is achieved by larger holes. These larger holes allow for larger dirt particles to flow through them if not oiled properly.

Even if they are oiled properly, and the oil collects the dirt particles as it is designed to do, then gain that is hoped to be achieved by the filter is lost because now those larger holes are clogged by equally large particles of dirt after a short period of time.

At least this is my understanding.

You should build this for your cold are intake/snorkel. http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=968190

How practical is this really? Doesn't rain water fall straight into the cowl and get sucked into the intake that way? I realize that a certain amount of water in the intake is actually a good thing, but under a heavy rain?

Also, have you seen TOI in mud and water? I'm not sure this is the best setup for him. LOL!

Anyone that has a 4.0 (or a 4.2 for that matter) knows that they self oil the air filters. I will never have to worry about mine drying out. :)
