TJ vibs ~65-75

It's a 2001 stock TJ, manual transmission... I am experiencing minor vibs while doing highway driving in the range of 65-75 miles an hours. ( :bs: but I don't actually drive that fast 'cause it is over the speed limit ) Initial thoughts point me to something along the lines of an unbalanced wheel, but I was wondering if anyone had any similar problems and what the solution was.

thanks

Does it seem to be coming from a particular area of the vehicle? Is it at a frequency that would indicate wheel speed or driveline speed? The driveshaft spins 3-4 times faster than the wheel, so that may be a clue to determining where it is coming from. Try rotating the tires to see if that makes a difference. Check your U-joints in the driveshafts, too.

Have you gotten your XJ running yet?

Doesn't seem to be coming from any where in-particular. It feels similar to when my U-joint went bad in the XJ...
checked u-joints at the axels, but skid protection really limits me getting too close to the front output of the transfercase. All the joints and play in the drive line seemed fine (as not really any).

I rotated the tires once and the problem has not gone away, however I did remove nails form two different tires (2 different times); maybe i should get all of the tires rebalanced.

The Xj is driving fine, i just havent taken it on any long trips lately. problem acted up when I had it on the road for extended periods of time and havent really seen it since i re did the ignition system (plugs, points, coil, wire)

However, i just got side swipped driving it to sears yesterday night on Almonesson rd. 18yr old kid either went through or skidded past a stop sign at the intersection of Lowerlanding/Good Intent and Almonesson. I had already made my turn and he hit me right in the pasenger door/rocker pannel, $ucks! :rattle: wasn't my fault, but I sure that I will get screwed by my insurance co anyway. A lot more damage to his car (VX jetta) then mine. :sunshine: mine is mearly cosmetic

Rock rails would have saved you there... you could weld some angle over the rockers along their entire length, install those Smittybilt nerfs we got a long time ago and then run some steel up to the rocker angle for a solid structure.

I'd start with getting the tires rebalanced on the TJ.

the kicker is, i have a set of rock rails that I bought... just haven't installed them yet. they are sitting in my shed

What kind?

Gimme those Smittybilt nerfs then, I'll put them on my MJ.

I've found most stock TJ's have a slight vibe at freeway speeds. It's usually the rear driveshaft. You can do a T-case drop or a fixed yoke.

even on a stock TJ?

I'd check the tires first, if you pulled nails and fixed them how did you do it ? Both our TJ's are running 30's and have no vibes at speed and I've had my daughters up to around 80mph a couple of times.
If you dismounted the tires and put the patches inside they are for sure out of balance unless you balanced them again.

on both tires, i had patches installed at a local tire shop. the tires were said to be balanced afterwards, but I think that would be my best bet.

just had the front tires balanced by my local tire shop... seems to have done the trick atleast for now. thanks for your inputs.

You can imagine my relief...

Oh, and my dog can beat up your dog.
