TJ help, speedo wont work

Randomly yesterday the speedometer in my girlfriends 97 tj did not work. I got it to go up to about 20mph for a second by gunning it from a stop but it dropped back down to 0. any suggestions or any rearsons why it is doing this? Need help fast.

Check the speedo sensor on the tailshaft of the tranny if 2wd and the t-case if 4. The location might be different in a TJ but thats how it is in an XJ.

Is that the part with the wire plug that has the speedo gear on the other end of it?

Out of curiousity, did the other gauges (tach, etc) drop to zero at the same time, or do the others continue to read correctly?

Yes should be, since the speedometer is more than likely electronic, there will be a couple wires that plug into it.

You might also check the speedo drive gear. Mine stripped and killed the speedo.
Whichever part it is, you WILL get a check engine light soon if not fixed.

Theres a good possibility, im not real familiar with any wranglers, just trying to give a general idea as to where to locate the speedo stuff.

i had that happen to me and all it was for me was a rerally dirty fuse, so check that first

No, there are some 2wd tj's out there, mostly in sunny beach resorts...

Same as an XJ.......pull the cluster, clean contacts and reinstall. The XJ and TJ use the same type of two plug conectors and they get loose/corroded.

Yes it is an electronic cluster and speedo. No only the speedometer was affected no other guages. I will try all the fuses and make sure they are in good shape and I will pull the cluster and clean the contacts. I did not know they made 2wd tj's thats kinda stupid and pointless to me.

Yea, i agree. Like RichP said, there found mostly in places where 4wd is not needed. I would imagine mainly just for show.
