stock on my 99 sport is 225 70 15 stock steel wheels 15 x7
235 60 15 yokohama avid st or bfgoodrich radial ta
will a 255 60 15 fit ( someone told me it would ( stock rim)

technally yes, though not reccomended by most shops that mount tires. when i did mine the first time they had me go with a 245/60/15 on a 15x7 rim. im quite happy with my radial t/a's, im not sure if the yokohama is a better tire, but it seems to get good ratings.

im running a 255/55-16 on an 8" rim, 5" backspacing, no rubbing ends even with the fender flares

The 255/60's will probably fit, but on 7"wide wheels, you are going to get a lot of sidewall flex when you are cornering on the street. 255/60's are 10" wide on the tread with only a 6"sidewall. The wider tread still fits okay for offroad on a 7"wheel, since the sidewall is taller (8+") and you want it to be flexy, but since you are looking at street tires and (I assume) street performance, I think you might want to consider putting them on a wider rim. Just a few cents for consideration...

From the Jegs webpage.

Radial T/A Tire P255/60R15
131-71728 Tire Section Width on

Measuring Wheel Width*:10.2'' on 7.5'' Wheel
Tire Overall Diameter:27.1''
Tire Tread Depth
(in/32nds):11.0
''Wheel Diameter:15'
'Required Wheel Width:7.0'' - 9.0'
'Revolutions per Mile
at 45-MPH:768.0
Max Load (lbs@psi):1885 lbs. @ 35 psi
*NOTE: Section width varies approximately 0.2'' (5mm) for every 0.5'' change in wheel width.

Id say your safe on a 7" wide wheel. But an 8" wide one would do the trick IMO.

good point on the flexy sidewall
it rides a little stiff now so I might likethe side wall. and higher pressures might help (40 ish)
I am not chaninging the rim so maybe the 235 60 woul be better
going to a 255 50 mihgt a cost more b fit LESS well ont he 7 inch rim

I would stick with 225/70R15 tires if you're keeping the stock rims. Wider tires look trick but add rolling resistance and increase fuel consumption. If you want to improve handling, I'd suggest 17" rims and 225/60R17 tires. They're the same diameter but the lower sidewalls would reduce flex.

i still say stock rims 245/60/15 or go with mustang 17's for cheap and 245/50/17's (or close to that)

dino, how does your stroked jeep hook with those 225/70's?

Over here it hooks up much better than it did on Saudi roads but I can still go sideways if I apply the throttle too suddenly. I'd still go for a set of 17" rims if I can find them cheaply enough and keep the same width.
