This is too tempting, someone talk me out of it please

I cant say for the HF winch and its warranty, but I can say that Smitty Built has a pretty good warranty. I work for 4WP and I can say that for the most part the warranty is pretty dang good, also if its not warrantied we ca usually order the parts to fix it, I am pretty sure that HF cant get replacement parts for there winch.

there is a winch test floating around the net were the only winches left standing after some brutal testing was the HF and warn. they did a few straight pulls, a few near vertical pulls, and a few others right after each other. they were smoking t-maxx, smittybuilt, and superwinch winches, but the harbor freight kept on truckin. they did mention the stupid slow line speed.

as long as the winch can get me out of whatever i'm stuck on/in i could care less how fast it is.

when it comes time for a winch i'm gonna stick a HF one on my rig.

Better go back and re-read your winch test article. The Harbor Freight (Chicago Electric) placed a distant 3rd behind Warn and Superwinch. The winches tested were Chicago Electric, Mile Marker, Ramsey, Superwinch, T-Max, Warn, and Bulldog. Despite the $500 price difference, the Superwinch ran neck and neck with the Warn. The Chicago Electric placed third simply due to the fact that it was the only other winch that did not fail. Still pretty damn impressive for such a cheap (er, inexpensive) winch...

Not trying to bust your balls, just gotta stick up for my Superwinch when I see it being unfairly picked on!

For anyone considering that Harbor Freight (Chicago Electric) winch, here's the referenced article. It's a good read (and probably won't talk you out of buying it):

What the name of the extended warranty for the smitty winches? I bought mine at 4wd hardware last year and opted for the extreme warranty or something like that (10 percent $$) and it covers any breakage for a long time.

The winch has been great so far. I've pulled with it a few times and also pulled logs and stuff. It's loud but pretty darn fast. I got it for $299! Screw HF, go smitty. One thing I don't like about the HF winch is the switch next to the drum. It's a sliding switch that would get stuck or jammed when there is tension on the cable. I had a milemarker (looks exactly the same) before the smitty and I hated that type of switch. I like the knobs like warn and smitty have. It's easier to use.

I've used my Smittbily XRC-8 for almost a year now. It's held up great! Only issue I had was the solenoid due to deep Jersey mud. Replacements are cheap (free under warranty in most cases). I've pulled down 3 large trees with it, recovered myself from lots of sticky, bad situations, pulled friends out, had a whole night of winching known as "winchfest", this was not planned! It's stood stout in all but one usage.

Mile markers make great bumper ornaments

I got the Smittybilt XRC10 for the same price as this HF one through winchdepot.com with free shipping.
