this article in our school paper chaps my @$$

Personally I don't really get into other people's business about why they do what they do, if they have a confederate flag well thats good, they feel that they can do that, and they can. Fine by me. If somebody doesn't like that somebody else has a confederate flag, well ok, they can think that, fine by me.
BUT
when somebody goes as far as print something that is going out to a large body of people, in this case students, probably lots of students, that is degrading to ANY huge group of people and classifies them all as "rednecks" and anybody who flys the stars and bars is a beer drinking, snuff dipping, truck owning, and has derogetory names for other people.........WHAT IN THE HELL WAS THIS KID THINKING!
Of all the wierd things that go through the school news paper at my school, nobody ever contradicts themselves.
As much as his first line might have made sense to some people, I don't think any of it should be in a school news paper.

I wouldn't let it Chap anything.

It appears college has much more to teach this fellow than history (and it appears he flunked that).

The Confederate Flag is a Icon like any other. It means different things to different people. To some it means Slavery, though that is not what the war was about. To some it means to be a "Rebel", and in most ways that is hitting closer to the mark. To say it is the Icon of a former Government is accurate and to fly it on occasions where we celebrate our fallen soldiers is approriate as those who gave their last measure for that Flag should be honored just as much as those who fell on the Union side.

If someone wants to fly a Confederate Flag to show that they are a Rebel, who cares?
To fly the Confederate Flag on Memorial Day...Most appropriate.
However, to fly the Confederate Flag at a Government installation or seat of power... that would be quite another thing.

reading that really pissed me off, and i hate when people confuse rednecks and country people. nothing being wrong with either, some "rednecks" i know are the most honest hard working people i know...might not know the square root of 693, but oh well.

going to the confederate flag thing...some people in really southern states fly is for racism...a lot of people i know have stickers, or other things like that just for pride. its a southern thing. if you havn't grown up with it you will never understand it, i personally dont have any confederate things, but it doesn't offend me at all to see flags or stuff like that

i would prefer they fly the american flag with it, and fly the american flag larger and higher per proper flag etiquette. I am not offended by the confederate flag at all and i am yankee through and through. I do get mildly upset at folks here in detroit that dont fly a american flag yet have a Detroit redwings flag, or a University of Michigan or Michigan State flag.

I want to kick those people in the nutz with some size 14 steel toe timberlands and lift them a foot off the ground. You can fly any flag you want but if you have a nice house, nice job or are fortunate that the american tax payer is subsidizing your education at college you ought to be flying an american flag or i take it as an insult, if you fly flags and leave old glory out of the mix.

*lacing up the steel toes*

What wrong with trucks, beer and a few good jokes?:dunno:

when i moved to coastal oregon back in 2001 from virgina, where i grew up the past 20 years, i remember seeing these guys drive around with a confederate flag hanging off the back of their truck. now, i had never been west of colorado until this point in my life but it was somewhat of a shock. this was supposed to be tolerant oregon. i have been up here in the nw for 6 years now, seen dozens of flags flown. what i've concluded is that alot of these dumbass kids out here flying the flag are doing it purely for looks and shock factor. it's the same guys that have dumb stickers like" cowboy up" or cowboy up or go sit in the truck" now how many of these guys and girls have ever been on a horse or worked on a ranch. probably not many. now for the people that are truly trying to preserve their heritage- i was in charleston south carolina for 6 weeks this fall, i saw countless cars with confederate flag sticker with sayings like" confederate sons and daughters" i've seen black guys wear flag bandannas. anyways to wrap this all up, it has different meanings to different people.

The irony of a hillbilly calling a southerner a redneck.

I wonder how many branches HIS family tree actually has.

Dumba$$.

WHY is it that it's ok to be racist as long as your NOT WHITE???

I don't care much for the South. Don't care about the Confederate flag. However, the level of ignorance in that article is astounding. Stupid kids. He shows as much prejudice as he is denouncing. I love it when closed minded bigots hold up closed minded bigots to show how above it all and evolved they are.

I dont think I could say it any better.

Payback for centuries of white oppression.

I find it funny that whitey could dish it out for hundreds of years but can only whine and mewl when the shackle is on the other foot. It's embarassing.

It's comparable to a big, tough blow-hard breaking down in tears because he's stubbed his toe. Suck it up, ya' cry baby!

I didn't oppress you. How long do we have to keep bringing it up before it's ok to say X number of generations haven't been slaves?

I am whitey! :D:D:D:D:D German, Swedish, maybe some Irish. I didn't say I was oppressed. I said it's payback time. Quit whining about it and get on with life. So we were born one generation too late. boo-hoo. Now we have to stand and listen to the other side rant. My point is stand straight - don't whine about it.

Payback is payback. This isn't 1st grade recess on the playground. Life isn't fair. If you're serious about seeing some action on this front, talk to your representives at state and DC levels. Just don't whine about it.

Exactly, that statement can be applied to both sides of the arguement.

My field of study, and my profession, is looking at the history of human actions. Do that for a while and you get a little...hardened to the plea of "Can't we all just get along?"

I do hold out some hope for the future, but then it is 15:00 and I have to leave work early so that I can pick up the boys in time to get the 11yo to the baseball field where I will have to spend most of the game fighting with the 1yo who loves nothing better than eating spent sunflower seed hulls out from under the stands. So, my mood is a bit clouded this afternoon and I appologize for jumping on everybody :peace:

You sure you're not a burnt out Black Panther? It sounds like you listen to too many speaches by Sharpton and Jackson

Relax on the retoric, you are sooooo far off base it's funny to watch.

I've already relaxed a little bit.

I'm not saying it is time for whitey to pay-up. I'm saying it should come as no surprise to whitey that the 'other side' would try to take that position, to gain whatever advantage they can. That is part of human nature. So is whining - it's just the whining gets a little tiresome. So, I'll quit whining about the whining and we can get back to some serious web wheeling.

I actually have never listened to any speach by either Sharpton or Jackson. Nor do I support them. They are obviously doing just as I say - taking the position that whitey should pay - and taking that position only to garner support in the political theatre. My only point is, the whining about is a little embarassing. OK, I quit :gag:

I understand your point, and you are spot on. Carlos Mencia does a bit about Gay pride shirts, and black pride shirts. He says he wears a brown power shirt all the time. He asks how far a white guy would get wearing a white pride shirt. It might not be fair, it's life. There is still nothing on this planet I would rather be than a white male American. In the famous words of Chris Rock, "Whitey, you're gonna be alright".:D

First off I am going to say I am a northerner. I live in Iowa born and raised.
Second-If I was back then I would pack up and move to the South beings they know what freedom is.

As a northerner I do not fly the "Battle Flag" because it ticks Southerners off when Northerners fly it. (don't no why, they should be happy someone from this side agrees with them)

The "Battle Flag" does not mean racist redknecks. The North had slaves just as the South did. If the Civil War was about "racism" then why would blacks volenteer? Seems to me that what you learn in school is only 1 side of the story.

If you are going to call the confederate flag a "racist symbol" then I have news for you...We are going to have to call the Stars and Stripes a racist symbol as well. And bringing on the battle that "the kkk uses the "Battle Flag" so that means it is racist well my brothers, the kkk uses the Stars and Stripes at the top of their list! They have to fly it. It is THEIR law. (I did a research paper on this and talked to a kkk member)

So take the time and do some research instead of hearing what the gov't wants you to here because they support a certain side.
