So I get home today from the beach and before I could even unpack I went by my moms to look at her XJ.

The only damage I can find is the bumper, tail pipe and the trailer wiring harness. It was raining so I didn't lay under it but the hatch opens/closes like it should, non of the body panels are crinkled, all of the doors are inline. There may be some crossmember damage but I don't see it! Yhe cargo floor is straight and undamaged.

They gave her 2700 for it so I think I'll just fix it for her with a new bumper/brackets and straighten the exhaust.

The 04 Honda Civic that rear ended her had 9k in damages and the driver was injured. My mom has only a slight case of whiplash.

Maybe the adjuster was a democrat!

LOL! She is die hard republican but most folks around here are. Roanoke is a conservative town.

He told my mom that the frame was bent upward 1-1/2 inches and it would cost $500 just to pull the frame. If the frame were bent that far then the rear hatch would no longer open/close and the rear body panels would have crinkles some where.

I can't even see where the hitch was moved any at all, its still level and centered. The exhaust is hitting the axle and the bumper is damaged and that is all I see.

Shows what they know. What frame?
If it still drives straight, doesnt shimmy or leak anything id say ive seen worse looking rigs driving around with owner created "damage". Hell ive had more damage that that on a trail run. 2700 is not bad really. You could fix it up for that with no problems. Might even get her a better bumper (i definitely would.) Those stockers are damn near useless.

Take a look at the frame rails at the leading edge of the hitch assembly (right where the frame rails start to curve up over the axle). Chances are that's where the damage is.

hell, I've got three Jeeps here that could stand $2700.00 bumpers-- tell the Honda driver I'm down here next time his insurance wants to give $$ away!

definitely glad moms wasn't seriously injured, though.

I think all it needs is a bumper, she never tows anything and just wants the hitch gone. The estimate said $400 for a new hitch and $100 to paint it!

Will do, I suspect that there will be some cracking there but nothing that i can't weld up.

2700 should buy some stiffeners and a cage, and a new bumper

I don't think my 70 year old momma needs that stuff, LOL!

Her insurance company totaled it and is going after his company for the deductible and replacement cost.

She said he walked up to it and said, "Yep, its totaled!" He never even looked under it. He has the hatch, rear fenders listed as needing paint! There is not a scratch on them!!

1. Glad your mom is okay minus the whiplash!
2. Can I get that hitch off of you??? I need one!!!!

Jon,

Come to the Crawl and you can kills two birds with one stone. Sell a hitch and wheel. Win-Win.

Wtf, I need an insurance guy like that, only got $1300 for the datsun and that was after getting an attorney

I took the bumper and hitch off over the weekend and only found some minor crinkling in the frame, no cracks. The frame is pushed forward about 3/8"

I have the Jeep at an alignment shop now getting it checked for 2 things;

1) will it pass VA state safety inspection with the crinkles in the frame
2) will it track straight, did the rear axle get shifted any.

If it passes both of those criteria then it will get new exhaust(the old exhaust got demolished by the wreck) and a replacement bumper and I will send mom on her way "Jeepin'" again.

There was a guy at work on 1st the other day with the whole side of the Jeep caved in like your sons. I have no clue how he got in and out...

I could still be driving that XJ if it would pass inspection. It runs and drives fine!

I got my moms XJ back from the alignment shop today. All 4 tires are still pointed straight ahead and the frame will pass VA state safety inspection. The alignment only cost me $40.

I'm putting a rear bumper on it tonight and getting the new exhaust put on it in the morning and I'll be done with that project.

The bumper was free and the exhaust is $150 at Mieneke(cat-back)

So right now she has $190 in it to get it back on the road. So she pocketed around $2500 from the rear ender.
