Thermostatically Challenged

So, swapped all of the parts on today. I have a serious wrenchers problem when it comes to thermostats. Did one for one of Troy's projects a while back. I got the housing on and torqued down, looked down, and theres the thermostat, sitting on the floor. Fawk!. So today while doing my own rig, that was brought up early in the day. Well it was reassembly time, I got everything back on the front of the engine, look down at the ground, and there she is, shiny new thermostat. You've got to be kidding me right? Wait, it gets better. So I throw it in there, well unbeknown to me, the thermostat slipped out of it's little pocket. So I get the housing torqued down, and get everything back together. We start it up, and it's leaking coolant at the housing. So I take it back off and see that the thermo slipped down. Well after taking it off and putting it back on, Troy notices that it's still leaking, but from the face of the housing. So he looks a little closer, the damn thing is cracked! When I tightened it down with it slipped down it cracked the freakin' housing.

Well, luckily enough my old housing was fine. So we just threw that back on and called it good. I'm gonna order a new one and swap it out when I get the other heater hose (sent me the wrong return line). Could of been worse, and it usually is when we work on my rig. So it was a pretty good day I think. Some pics:

Daaaaayuum DJ! So evil with the wrenches.

Thermostats and timing sets...Just not happy until I've done it over and over a few times. LOL That's why I like the Hylomar sealer so much, easy to clean up and reset.

Indeed - Thermostatically challenged is correct! :D

I couldn't believe it when he said he forgot to install the t-stat not more than 20 minutes after we had reminded ourselves of his forgetting to install it on my project '96. (cough-"Tard"-cough) :dunce:

I suppose it's possible that DJ got a bit distracted when he saw the awesome rig I brought back from my lot to part out this afternoon.........

That radiator truely is the shit though. I'll be ordering one when I need to replace one on the Heep. Lots of good heat dissapation without those crappy plastic tanks or black paint covering all that nice aluminum surface. I'm eager to hear the temp. results.

I feel your pain. I finally got around to replacing my T-stat because I think I'd ruined it after a near overheat (engine never reaches 210 operating temp now) and I cracked the housing on reinstall :gonnablow. Now I have the same problem becuase the housing leaks.

at least your stat doesn't come like this, or maybe it would be best if it did, I don't know.
(older LS1's come stat and housing together)

Here's the other POS:

Both doors have rusted/torn upper hinges so ya gotta lift up on 'em to close 'em...... I gotta take a pic of the welding "repair" of the busted tilt column...... just as clever as the numbered hoses. And he musta got pissed off when the welding wouldn't stick to the pot metal/aluminum because the gauge cluster is punched full of holes..... :roflmao:

I'm also of the opinion that the guy drove his XJ's using the Braile method........ There ain't a straight panel on either one of 'em.
