So who's watching the miniseries?

The intro with stock film from WWII was heart wrenching for me. I saw my dad's (I miss him something fierce) ship, the USS Wharton AP7, off loading Marines and supplies. Supposedly, that footage was at Guadalcanal in August of '42 which lines up with everything my old man told.

Funny thing, my dad hated Marines, yet he always spoke of them with respect. I think he was more influenced and sadden by what the Marines went through and saw during the war than pretty much anything else. When his ship was taking in Carlson's Raiders, he overheard their briefing. Carlson explained to his Marines that they had rations for 1 week and that if any of them felt that they needed to take prisoners, that those prisoners would be fed from their rations.

So what do you guys think of series so far? Personally, I think it's better than Band of Brothers. And it's good that someone is trying to put out there what the Pacific was like since its been overshadowed by the liberation of Europe.

Got my DVR set to record the series. Watched part 2 and 3 last night while part 4 was recording. I watched Band of Brothers and Generation Kill, too early to tell if it is any better than these or not. Pretty good so far.

Love Band of Brothers (have it on DVD) and desperately wanted to be able to watch The Pacific. Currently don't have HBO though, so will have to wait for it to come out on DVD. I agree, the battles of the Pacific are often overlooked but are every bit as heart-wrenching and grueling as what the boys in Europe went through.

I loved Generation Kill, but for entirely different reasons. Gen Kill was like looking a viewing window of my time in the Marines. Every single personality type you saw in Gen Kill I could point and assign a name to it. Fruity Rudy? I roomed with him. :P and we all thought he was queerer than a 3 dollar bill. It was just a fun watch for me.

i have and watch band of brothers at least once a year. want to get it on blue ray. havent herd of gen kill, have to check it out. seen the previews for the paciffic, really wish i had hbo

I've watched all 4.
The first seemed so short, but the rest have gotten better, and better.

I've started to really understand the characters, and it's so well made.

I love it!

Im a huge fan of all things ww2. Such an incredible era of history.

One of my Grandma's cousins died in the Philippines in 1945. I get choked up reading about the history and try to wrap my brain around the warrior spirit these men had. I don't have HBO so I won't be watching this series right away. I can't wait to see it though.

Hope to see it as well when it comes out on DVD.

Since we're talking about relatives and their roles in the war, my grandfather flew Messerschmitt me262's for the Luftwaffe near the end of the war. He made it clear that he hated the Nazi's, and was forced into service. He said he wanted to be as far away from the war as possible, so he became a flyboy. He says he flew over 100 missions over Northern Europe, mainly dealing with Russian targets. Got shot down near the end of the war and put into a Russian prison camp.

I wished I had talked with him more before he passed away a couple years back.

I think it started out a little slow, but it's picking up. Either way I enjoy it.

My grandfather was in the same position. He's from Hungary and from I know they orginally were fighting the germans, but when they took over he was forced to fight. He fought in Russia most of the time, before being turned over to the US troops, and coming to America.
