The old "Front Drive shaft SYE quick fix" questions

I have almost 7" lift with the stock XJ front shaft in the rear. No issues.

John

mine's 5" and it doesn't fit, fully extented it's about .25" too short. Has less to do with the amount of lift and more to do with how far your t-case hangs down.

OMG......gotta love that old hotdog cart /w/ the umbrella!

If your looking for some easy cash...check out DCI Biologicals. Donate blood plasma. I made lotso $$ off of them. IIRC, it was @ $70/week.

What Major?

This thread has officially been hijacked.:jester:

I'm a graphic designer down here.....I'd really like to start doing like custom car/motorcycle paint jobs and stuff like that....but I'm still needing to strengthen my bodywork skillz.

BACK ON TOPIC!!!:
So....... did anyone sucessfully using the stock xj front shaft on the rear with a SYE....have to use the spicier flange too? or does it just bolt right up to the SYE's included parts?

Spicer # 211229x is only needed with the H&T. If you do the PORC or other HD SYE, you will not need the Spicer flange.

In your first post. you say you have the D35. From my expierences, you cannot use the front shaft in the rear with the D35. Too Short, pinion length is shorter on the D35 than a 8.25.

Sorry, thats what I get for not reading the whole thread!:viking:

Would you like to see pics of my front shaft on a D35. It has about 1.5 of slip showing. I am going to a D44 and am concerned that the shaft will be too long.

yes sye yes 8.25 and you might be able to make it to around 5" safely if you can find the right driveshaft. my zj front shaft(being used in rear of my xj) is 34.5" extended, 31.5" collapsed joint to joint, and it is working good for me and i'm at 4-5" of lift.

so you can use a grand cherokee front driveshaft? Any years or models that I need to look for?

about how much will a used front DS cost? and is there any difference in length between a 2dr and 4dr. i have an '01 XJ and am wanting to do the hack n tap sye. i have a np231 with an 8.25 rear. how much can i expect to spend on the whole project? i know the hack and tap is like $87. is the flange adaptor from RE too? or do i need to get that from somewhere els? i am only running 3" of lift so a front ds will be long enough right?

If i were you, I would just go ahead and get the PORC SYE for $180 shipped along with a front driveshaft from a bonyard ranging from $40-150 bucks.

I was thinking about doing the Hack n' tap myself.....untill I read all the problems and complications that people have had with them. They aren't fool proof to install.....and even if you do it correctly they are more prone to failure (& wobbles) than just going ahead and eliminating the slip yoke output shaft.

with everything said and done (not considering install) your prob looking at $250-300 range......give or take a few.

Interesting.....

Pics not necessary, I believe you.:sad1:

What did your shaft come out of? Mine was from a 4.0/ aw4/ 231.

What TC do you have?

Also, I failed to mention, I have the 242(which is longer, IIRC), not the 231. Sorry.

good excuse to lift it some more , to make your driveshaft to fit. I have 8 inch lift and use a stock shaft , with a 44 in the rear but i do wish it was about a half inch longer . tc is 1/4 lower too

I got a shaft out of an auto/231. My XJ is 4.0/auto/242. I don't have first hand knowledge, but I've read that the 231 and 242 are the same length

As far as cost, I spent $99 dollars on a CV yoke for my 242. Hacked and tapped. Found a 99 at a parts yard for $70. Decided it was worth it for the late model. A month later got a 98 at the u-pull yard for $15. Late models are very rare in my u-pull. So now I have a 99 front on my 2000 rear with a 98 spare. Total cost $185

Are you sure you have the D35??

I tried that exact same set up (aw4/242/D35), with the shaft out of an aw4/231 and it was too short. With it fully extended, it would reach but there would be no room for slip.

I'm really just more curious than anything now. I've swapped in an 8.8 since then and am still running the stock slip yoke shaft. I'm only at 3" and I set the pinion angle when I welded on new perches so, I'm good for now. I won't be going higher for a while, I'll worry about it when the time comes.:)

Thats your SYE?
That dosen't look like any Hack and Tap that I've ever seen.
Did you cut off the output shaft of the TC? Is the longer yoke bolted through the center of the output shaft, (like a true H&T)?
Looks like you just added a longer slip yoke to a front shaft.

More details please.

EDIT: Nevermind, I found your thread explaining your methods. http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=79757

I cut my shaft to 1.25" of splines. Tapped it w/ 3/8" bolt. It slides onto the shaft all the way to the seal. Machined out the splines to fit on the shaft.
