$300 quote to take apart my tilt steering in order to tighten the 4 bolts that connect the tilt segment to the joint!!!

It's my understanding that this job is a PIA and special tools are needed!

Any of you guys have these tools and a warm garage?

I think I did all that when I fixed my cruise control!

And found out how to do it here, which led me to join...

But I didn't need no steenkin' special tools, just a little creative engineering.

I wish I had time to help, but I've got three basement jobs going. Can it wait til February?

I dunno...

It's pretty loose, sloppy and wobbly...

like one of those Manheim Rd whores...

Is it possible for the steering shaft/assembly to come apart while driving?

I'm kinda skeeeered to drive it now...

Which is why I went and got a quote...

shizzle...

How many miles is Durand?

Probably just a couple miles more than your commute to work!
If you can borrow or rent the tools to make things go faster, we could do it here some evening next week, maybe Friday?

I know you have a problem with noobs but I would give you a hand with it anyway if you lived closer. Its not that hard a job but I can think of several other jobs I would rather do. The tool that pushes the collar down to get the ring off helps. The snap ring sucks. The tools help keep the fingers from getting stabbed but as the one guy above said it can be done. If you lived closer we could drink beer, watch tv and do it here...........................

neither of us, I just googled gm steering column repair and that's what I got.

Thanks for all the offers guys...

Fixed the column it in the driveway over the past few days whenever the baby was sleeping...

I kinda cheated and only partially dissasembled the column...

I only tightened 2 of the 4...

I did use lock-tite tho...

I am SO looking forward to that big garage...

I need to find a beer fridge!

What REALLLY sucks is:
I have a new house with 2+car garage. There's only room for 1 car due to XJ parts & tools, etc.
I've had my father-in-law's XJ in there for 1 month now doing a 4wd conversion & lift. I have 4 jeeps & 2 vans sitting outside waiting their time... it's cold!

WOW! Kind of looks like my place, only with a lot fewer trees, but add a garage. Most of my stuff gets to sit around until it is warm enough outside to work on, unless I realllllly need to get one going right now.
And speaking of garage rants: Try convincing yourself that the #4 gravel IS better than laying on the dirt, that throwing wrenches in the rain is actually pleasurable, and that when the Publisher's Clearing House crew finally shows up at my house with that big,fat check I WILL HAVE MY GARAGE!!!! (yeah, right.) Well, at least I have a big frikkin light on a pole right where I park/work on stuff.
