Good idea. Smittybuilt makes a sythetic line series now.

How far out does that mount stick?

For me, I think that the a receiver mount is the way to go. Too much rain up here... winch death via rust and corrosion.

Yeah, sucker's still in the box. Got home late last night and had no time to play with me winch. Maybe tonight after I get all buffy at the gym....

I'm also thinking of lightweight winch line to reduce overall weght. My rig is getting mighty heavy.

When you do switch over to synthetic line, weigh your cable and see what the weight difference is. I have been wanting to get a winch to use during the winter months to pull other people(and myself) out if need be. It should be locked F/R before the snow hits though.

Sounds good. I'll do that and list the weight differences. Hmmm, synthetic winch line...good stocking stuffer?

I did a quick setup tonight to see how it would look on the front bumper. D'oh! Looks like I will need to move my lights. I'll probably make some quick disconnects for the lights and remove them when I have the winch installed. I really don't want the lights anywhere else, so that is my only option. Here's a quick look.

When I do the real installation, I'll take side and front pics for anyone who wants to see the approach angle. Here are a few thoughts on the removable winch:

1) This bastard is heavy. Seems like about 70 lbs, so hauling a winch and winch bumper full time can't be good for economy.
2) I can put this winch on my rear bumper.
3) It will not be exposed to the elements full time.
4) My kid can use this on his XJ. He also has a front and rear receiver; just needs wiring.
5) I really can't think of a fifth pro.

On the LeBaron Hood vents...I installed them per Eric's direction and I am not sure if it is because of their location or not but the air intake blows warmer air when on just plain vent. I was wondering if heat from the engine was exiting the leBaron vent and then immediately being pulled into the HVAC cowl intake. Maybe mounting them a little farther forward may alleviate the heated air situation. There will be interference with the hood structural piece. Just a thought to think about before placing cutter to sheet metal.

How many con's can you think of?

Before you use that winch, make sure you pull out that cable all the way and wind it in under some good weighted drag.

I told my kid that I would pull his XJ up a hill as soon as I get it installed. I'll make sure I pull it all the way out.

Here's a short list of the "cons" that come to mind:

1) Rubicon
2) Comic-Con
3) Icon :)
4) Con artist
5) Con Air
6) Genghis Kahn (a good name for an XJ)

OK, Sean, here's your answer. I took a few crappy cell phone pics of the side of the removable winch plate to show the approach angle you asked for.

Keep in mind, I will need to remove the lights when I use this thing, and I still need to come up with a QD power connector, but these photos show you the clearance I still have.

Wow, thats a behemoth.

Looks good though.

I wouldn't leave it on, but in a pinch, you'd be happy to have it.

I definitely wont leave it on but it will be nice to have for my Moab trip next spring and any other local trips. Who knows, maybe I'll find a winch bumper one day and go ahead and swap it out after I get tired of lugging that behemoth around.

My weekend is not going as great as planned, as the Frog will be down for a week. Good thing I don't have a wheeling trip planned, or I'd be really pissed.

I started my exhaust manifold gasket replacement today, and had the intake manifold off in about an hour and a half and that includes removal of the driver's side engine mount (makes it sooo much easier). That's quite a bit quicker than the first time, which I think took me about 3 1/2 hours.

One thing I did to speed up the tear down was to buy a 13mm Gear Wrench for the power steering pump. Those three bolts are a real bummer without a ratcheting tool. That swivel headed Gear Wrench enabled me to remove those bolts in about two minutes, total. A definate must have if you don't already have one.

For those who follow the FB, you may recall my previous posts regarding the elimination of the factory crimp in the down pipe by the flange when I had my muffler installed. Here is a photo that shows the new down pipe that the muffler guys fabbed up. Looking at it now, I wish they had used a 2 1/2 pipe, but I suppose it is still better than the factory crimp.

Before I post the pic of why the Frog will be down for a week, here's a good shot of the APN header. The gasket looks good and it appears that I had a good seal on the intake manifold. There is one small contact spot on the header pipe so I'll need to look at that before reinstalling the intake manifold. No other grinding is needed, it appears.

DSCN5137.jpg

Alrighty...I've been complaining about an intake leak since I had my Magnaflow muffler installed. When I accelerate, a loud whistle sound comes from the intake, which I presume is robbing me of power and making me look and sound like an ass hat when I drive. Can't have that. I contacted APN and they sent me a new gasket, which is why I tore down the engine today.

When removed the intake manifold, I noticed a crack in one of the mounting flanges. A slight touch and it broke off in my hand. Bah! I got on the phone and ordered a new intake manifold for my '99 XJ from the dealer. I usually get a NAXJA discount on parts, but not this time. Double bah! Oh, for those who are contemplating a header install, DO NOT OVERTORQUE YOUR HEADER BOLTS.

DSCN5140.jpg

Since you cannot weld cast aluminum, I figured ordering a new intake would be the best way to go. I also was not about to do an endless search online for a used manifold and Pick and Pull is out of the question. A new manifold is less than 300 bucks, so I figure it was cheap enough to just buy a new OE manifold, which I hear is pretty decent on this model year. Because of the holiday the part won't be in until Wednesday, so it's good that I have a couple of other vehicles to drive. It's also good that I have deep pockets.

Oh well, this gives me more time to install my hood vents...On with the weekend! Happy Labor Day, yo.

you forgot Connor lol

i would gladly buy that bumper from you!! I love the look of that thing and its perfect for what i need.

I celebrated Labor Day by installing my hood louvers and I like how they turned out. Here's what I did.

First, I taped and measured where I wanted the louvers. You have to be careful not to interfere with the support bar under the hood.

DSCN5149.jpg

Once I was satisfied with the location, I marked off each taped section for the outside dimension of each louver, and the inside where I needed to cut. I simply used the opposite louver and laid it face down and traced around the outside edge, and repeated for the other side.

DSCN5152.jpg

This is about when it started getting hot, so I took my wife's beach umbrella and made some shade.

DSCN5154.jpg

I started off by drilling each corner with a step bit. Be careful not to drill into anything under your hood. I laid a towel and a couple layers of cardboard to make sure I did not drill or cut into anything important. Be mindful of the hood latch cable.

DSCN5155-1.jpg

I then had the extreme pleasure of cutting the straight lines with my jig saw. Cutting only took about 4 minutes each side.

DSCN5157.jpg

DSCN5158.jpg

I dropped one of the louvers into the newly cut hole and was pleased with the results. From underneath, I managed to miss the support beam and I did not cut into anything. I found that the louver had about an 1/8" play after I dropped it into the hole, but that was no problem, so long as both sides could be evenly aligned.

DSCN5160.jpg

I then fabbed up some mounting brackets out of pre-drilled 1/2" flat steel and used some black steel countersunk allen-head bolts and fiber nuts to hold everything together. I cut the flat steel to length and bent them to 90 degrees, then shot them with black semi-glass paint to prevent rust.

DSCN5162.jpg

Before I installed the mounting brackets, I made sure to paint the bare metal of the newly holes with red paint. I then measured the louver's one last time and tightened everything down. In this photo, you can see how perfectly the LeBaron hood vents between the supports under the hood. You may also some some silicone on the driver's side. You don't need to use that, but I had a bit left over from another job and thought I'd use it up. Yeah, I ran out before I got to the passenger side.

DSCN5163.jpg

This is an easy job and it only took me a couple of hours. Most of that time was cutting, bending, and modifying my brackets. You could easily do this job in about two hours, and I think it is well worth the investment.

They're off of a z34 lumina, keep an eye out in the for sale sections. They pop up on them from time to time.

Those look great Kelly. Where did you get the hood vents? iv looked for em, but cant find them anywhere

Lodi Jim sold them to me and I understand he took them off an 80's LeBaron. Keep an eye open on the forum and you'll find some eventually (I've been offered three separate sets in one week).
