The Frog Blog

Not all the way through. You take a left at the Wentworth Trail junction. This is my third trip, and first with the Frog. I did this twice with Old Blue sitting on 31's with no real problems. Great trip. My kid (100K XJ) won the best passenger hand for a cash prize (got ripped off...long story) and I won a Jeeper's Jamboree trip ($350 value) the first year and drove Old Blue all the way through the 'Con with no problems. That's a great event if you can make it.

That's a decent question, I suppose. During a poker run, you pay a couple of dollars for a "hand" of cards. There are 5 checkpoints along the trail and you recieve a new card at each checkpoint. Each card is sealed in an envelope and once you collect all 5 cards, you turn in your hand for judging. The best poker hand of the day wins. There are a few categories, but as driver, you would play the driver hand.

Here is a shot of us just starting off. My club likes to get an early start so we finish first.

I love this shot. Oh, never NEVER install your antenna on the side of your Jeep and expect to keep it. Bad idea.

Here's a shot of a few of the rigs on the granite slab, presumably waiting for a broken Toyota to clear the trail...Good times for all...

Here is a shot of Checkpoint #1 (just past the Gate Keeper) during last year's poker run.

Nice shot near the start of the run...Ah, Old Blue was such a good Jeep.

The 'Con is full of spectacular views.

There are plenty of spotters on the trail for the difficult stuff. This is cake on anything larger than 31's. For 31's, it is just sweet fun.

My all-time favorite photo of Old Blue. My kid fabricated a sweet metal ornament out of this picture. It is hanging in my office.

Protection is advised.

And here is a nice shot (below) of 100K XJ in Old Blue during his first Rubicon driving experience. I think he pooped a little.

When you go, get a poser shot by the Rubicon sign. (The leigh was from one of the checkpoints. I don't normally wear them since they make me look fat).

...And another of checkpoint #3 (on Wentworth Springs Trail)...

ry%3D400

Nearly finished with the run, and nary a scratch.

Here's checkpoint #4 near the end...Checkpoint 5 is at the place where you turn in your poker hand.

Last year, my kid (100k XJ) had 4 Aces and a Queen, but the "Q" was written down poorly and it looked like a "9" to the judge. He ended up coming in second, believe it or not, robbing him of the first place cash and trophy prize for best passenger hand. Still though, he ended up with 35 bucks and a cool trophy as a memento of the great trail ride.

The best hands are announced at the awards ceremony in the evening. This is also a great way of winning prizes through the massive raffle. As mentioned, I won a $350 ticket to the Jeeper's Jamboree. Other prizes are items such as a winch, bumpers, wheels, and smaller items.

Great fun. Don't miss out.

wow sounds like fun.. so you dont do the whole rubicon then?? just the easy parts i guess you could say? and good thing i just mounted my antenna on the side of the jeep (FACEPALM!) oh well..

I think i need to make a few runs to PC and practice running lines on some rocks before i go to the CON.

Yes, the annual poker run is essentially on the easy part of the Rubicon. There are some good spots, but it is nothing like going all the way through. Keep in mind that even the "easy" part on 31" tires provides plenty of challenge.

I guess i will see how SF goes. If it goes good, then ill consider going on the poker run.. Or i just follow you and you show me all the easy lines =)

The Hi Lander's Poker Run registration must be in by the 27th of May. Attendance is typically through 4x4 clubs throughout northern California, but I'm sure it is open to anyone. Check their website for details.

well i guess i could join the sac jeepers club. I was talking to a guy from there and he said that the club voted my cherokee in. I just dont want to pay dues!

rocknxj -- are those 5-90 battery cables? And that Optima looks good. Probably gunna run one when the current battery bites the dust.

Club dues for my club, the Boonie Bouncers, are only 24 bucks a year. However, as with all associated clubs, you also pay the annual Cal 4WDC membership dues. The money does not bother me as being a member of Cal 4Wheel helps keep our trails open and educates Toyota driver's how to properly wheel.

Honestly, I have to plead ignorance on the battery cables. The PO swapped cables with these heavy duty babies and did a swell job, but I do not know the manufacturer or where they were purchased.

I swapped the existing 5-year old NAPA gel battery for the Optima red top battery you see in the photo when I changed out the starter/solenoid back in 2009. (I thought my battery was bad but it turned out being a bad solenoid). I figure 5 years on a battery was a good life and so I did not feel too bad for the needless swap. I'm a fan of Optima anyway, as I've had them in previous Jeeps with absolutely no problems.

Will the optima fit in the stock tray and bracket setup, or is a bracket like what you have necessary?

Those are good looking cables. Does not look like auto parts store replacements, so probably custom.

The Optima battery fits in the stock tray perfectly. I just did not like the stock strap holding the top of it down so I spent a few bucks on a stainless steel box from Ruff Stuff Specialties. Drive to Loomis. Dan will give you a good discount.

I am officially sick of the rain. We camped at Sugarloaf State Park in Sonoma this past weekend and got hailed on big time. Looks like it will rain again today and tomorrow. I now fear the snow will not melt in time for the Rubicon Poker Run in June.

Here is the camp site. The Frog towed the trailer pretty well considering all the crap we took with us.

Proof of sucky weather.
